From the Thames Barrier in the east to Kingston-upon-Thames in the west – approximately 33 miles - these photographs capture the River Thames in many moods: from shallow gravel stream at Isleworth to swelling tidal torrent at Barnes and Chiswick; to international urban waterway around the City of London and beyond.Taken in 2012 and 2013 the primary aim of these photographs was to let a picture of London's river emerge organically from my wanderings. For many centuries the main trading artery of a Nation and centre of an Empire, its industrial docks, wharves and warehouses now resemble something more akin to a playground for tourists and Londoners alike. On the approaches to London, villas line the riverbanks and “gin palace” cruisers at private moorings make an ostentatious display of wealth. But the Thames is also a great leisure facility, with thousands of acres of public parkland along its banks being intensively used by sunbathers, swimmers, walkers, idlers, fishermen, rowers, canoeists, dinghy sailors, campers, bird-watchers and drinkers. The most expensive real estate in the country can be found along the bank of the Thames, much of it captured almost incidentally in these photographs. The overriding impression is one of colour; the overriding feeling is one of awe: awe at that complex historical accretion of centuries which line the banks of the most influential river in history and the great city which grew up around it.

1921. The book begins: It begins on the north side of the City, at Poverty Corner. It begins imperceptibly, and very likely is no more than what a native knows is there. It does not look like a foreshore. It looks like another of the byways of the capital. There is nothing to distinguish it from the rest of Fenchurch Street. You will not find it in the Directory, for its name is only a familiar bearing used by seamen among themselves. If a wayfarer came upon it from the west, he might stop to light a pipe (as well there as anywhere) and pass on, guessing nothing of what it is and of its memories. And why should he? London is built of such shadows; and while we are here casting our own there is not much time to turn and question what they fall upon. The Thames lies at the very heart of London and the south of England--both physically and metaphorically--and this engaging and personal portrait offers a perfect introduction to the river's many charms. The Historic Thames offers a personal and warm view of the river Thames in the early twentieth century. A geographic description of the Thames from its source to the sea and the human history tied up with the riverFollowing the Thames two hundred miles upriver through London to its Cotswold source, Belloc skilfully blends historical observations and personal commentary through his distinctive and elegant style. He draws revealing comparisons between the Thames and the Rhine, the Seine and other important European waterways to highlight the Thames's unique significance within British life. Revealing as much about the countryside, English identity and the author himself as about its history, The Historic Thames presents a romantic yet honest portrait of Britain's greatest river.A joy for anyone interested in travel, memoir, geography and history, Hilaire Belloc's The Historic Thames demonstrates the mighty river's contribution to the wider history of Great Britain.
