Et chacune de nos promenades au jardin s'accompagnait de gloussements: "Qu'il se porte bien ce palmier, il me rappelle Alger. Qu'il monte haut cet agave, on dirait Madagascar!" Au fond, le Gulf Stream nous consolait de la perte de nos colonies. Bien des années ont passé. Et aujourd'hui mon cher Gulf Stream m'inquiète. Sa santé me préoccupe. Va-t-il un jour, bientôt, comme on le dit, s'arrêter de couler? Qu'adviendra-t-il de la douceur de nos climats? Longtemps, j'ai fermé les yeux. Mais le moment est venu. Je ne suis pas scientifique. Plutôt promeneur. Alors, des violents remous du détroit de Floride aux maelströms de Norvège, des rivages fleuris d'Écosse aux abords légendaires de Nantucket, je suis allé, par les chemins de terre ou de mer, rencontrer les savants et les lieux.
