Die Pekinger Jesuitenkünstler wie Giuseppe Castiglione (1688-1766) und Jean-Denis Attiret (1702-1768) sind heute ein attraktives Forschungsthema, da sie als kaiserliche Hofmaler eine bedeutenden Einfluß auf die Entwicklung der Malerei nahmen: ihre zahlreichen, teils noch erhaltenen Werke verbinden europäische und chinesische Elemente und spielten eine wichtige Rolle im Wissenstransfer zwischen China und Europa. Castiglione entwarf die europäischen Paläste (Xiyanglou) im kaiserlichen Garten Yuanmingyuan, Michel Benoist (1715-1774) kreierte Wasserspiele nach dem Vorbild von Versailles, die den Kaiser begeisterten. Die Forschungen basieren zum großen Teil auf den Pionierarbeiten von George Robert Loehr (1892-1974), der in Peking als Sprachlehrer tätig war. In seiner 1940 in Rom erschienenen Dissertation würdigte er erstmals umfassend Castiglione und in späteren Aufsätzen Attiret, Moggi (1684-1761) und Benoist. Im vorliegenden Band werden diese ursprünglich italienisch, französisch und englisch erschienenen Materialien erstmals in kommentierter und aktualisierter Form mit erweiterter Illustrierung und Register vorgelegt, da das Thema bislang im deutschen Sprachraum kaum behandelt worden ist. Hinzu kommt eine autobiographische Skizze von Loehr, eine ausführliche Biographie Attirets von seinem Mitbruder Jean Joseph Amiot (1718-1793), eine Studie über die Wasserspiele der europäischen Paläste sowie eine umfangreiche, aktuelle und kommentierte Forschungsbibliographie zu den Jesuitenkünstlern. Mitarbeiter des Bandes sind der Ingenieur Prof. Albert Koenig (Univ. Hong Kong), der Museumsdirektor Claudius Müller (früher Museum für Völkerkunde München), der Sinologe Prof. Eugenio Menegon (Boston University) und die Religionswissenschaftlerin Marion Steinicke (Universität Landau). Mit Absicht ist nicht eine neue Gesamtdarstellung versucht worden (was einfacher gewesen wäre), sondern die grundlegenden Materialien sind übersetzt, ergänzt und kommentiert worden, sodass die Entwicklung der Forschung und ihre Quellen nachzuverfolgen sind. Zugleich wird damit die weitere Untersuchung des komplexen Themas erleichtert.

In der Einleitung blickt der Autor auf sein Leben und seine Arbeiten zurück. Das Schriftenverzeichnis ist nach Themen angeordnet: 16 Kapitel führen von Bibliographie und Bibliotheken über Ostasien zu China, Japan nach Zentralasien und Rußland - insgesamt etwa 1300 Eintragungen. Das letzte Kapitel verzeichnet Beiträge, die sich im Druck befinden oder in Arbeit sind. Zahlreiche Aufnahmen sind erläutert oder kommentiert und einige auch illustriert. Register erschliessen den Inhalt. Gegenüber dem früheren, rein chronologisch angeordneten Verzeichnis sind in den letzten Jahren 300 Eintragungen hinzugekommen; die sachliche Ordnung macht ebenso wie Anmerkungen die Information besser auffindbar. Der Autor war als Bibliothekar tätig, zuletzt als Ltd. Bibliotheksdirektor an der Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin, Privatdozent an der Freien Universität, Lehrbeauftragter an der Humboldtuniversität, Direktor der Internationalen ISBN Agentur und der Internationalen ISMN Agentur. Beruflich hat er sich für den Ausbau der Zeitschriftendatenbank und die Erfassung der verstreuten umfangreichen Zeitungsbestände eingesetzt. Jahrelang war bei der IFLA Vorsitzender des Runden Tisches für Zeitungen und für zahlreiche internationale Zeitungskonferenzen verantwortlich, deren Ergebnisse er in zehn Sammelbänden veröffentlicht hat. Im Bereich der Standardnumerierung hat er durch die Verbreitung der ISO-Standards für Bücher und für Noten wesentlich zur Rationalisierung des Buch- und Musikhandels beigetragen. Weitere Schwerpunkte sind Ostasien und ostasiatische Büchersammlungen, die Orientalisten und ihre Biographien, Korrespondenzen und Veröffentlichungen. Als rares Spezialgebiet kommt die Mandschuliteratur hinzu - Mandschu und Chinesisch waren die Amtssprachen des Reiches, in dem zwei der bedeutendsten Kaiser regierten, die es je hatte: Kangxi und Qianlong, die in Europa Bewunderung erregten und als Vorbild galten. Nicht nur nahmen die Mandschus das chinesische Reich gewissermaßen im Handstreich ein und regierten es 250 Jahre lang, sie schufen auch eine Schrift und eine eigene Literatur - geradezu fabelhaft! Ein spannendes Forschungsgebiet. Viele verzeichnete Publikationen befassen sich mit Wissenschaftsgeschichte, sind Biobibliographien und wissenschaftliche Briefeditionen. New Qing Imperial History uses the Manchu summer capital of Chengde and associated architecture, art and ritual activity as the focus for an exploration of the importance of Inner Asia and Tibet to the Qing Empire (1636-1911).
