Seaports, as part of urban centers, play a major role in the cultural, social and economic life of the cities in which they are located, and through the links they provide to the outside world. Port-cities in Europe have faced significant change, first with the loss of heavy industry, emergence of Eastern European democracies, and the widening of the European Community (now European Union) during the second half of the twentieth century, and more recently through drivers to change including the global Sustainable Development Agenda and the European Union Circular Economy Agenda. This book examines the role of modern seaports in Europe and consider how port-cities are responding to these major drivers for change. It discusses the broad issues facing European Sea Ports, including port life cycles, spatial planning, and societal integration. May 2019 saw the 200th anniversary of the first steam ship to cross the Atlantic between the US and England, and it is just over 60 years since the invention of the modern intermodal shipping container – both drivers of change in the maritime and ports industry. Increasing movements of people, e.g. through low cost cruises to port cities, can play a major role in changing the nature of such a city and impact on the lives of the people living there. This book brings together original research by both long-standing and younger scholars from multiple disciplines and builds upon the wider discourse about sea ports, port cities, and sustainability.

In 2001, the European Commission published its so-called Ports Package, a first attempt at developing a European policy for seaports. The Ports Package includes a Directive on Market Access to Port Services, which will influence the port industry thoroughly and lead to fundamental changes in daily port operations. In this volume, academics as well as practising lawyers from France, Ireland, Italy and Belgium describe the legal framework for the several branches of the port sector, recalling the far-reaching practical implications of existing general EU law and discussing the latest versions of the Port Services Directive proposal. Completed by authoritative views from the head of the Commission's ports unit, a specialist MEP, and representatives from both the public and the private port sector, this book offers a fairly complete overview of existing port law as well as the main points of concern in the policy debate. Its purpose is to serve both as a policy background document and as a working tool for public and private port players, as well as for academics and lawyers.

This book analyzes the progress, gains, and effects of Chinese overseas ports through in-depth and systematic studies of numerous cases in Europe and Latin America. China’s participation in overseas ports, especially under the rubric of the Belt and Road Initiative, is a matter of great concern to businesspeople, policymakers, and researchers pondering the implications of Chinese infrastructure activities and overseas investment. Yet there is insufficient knowledge concerning the actual nature of China’s role in specific ports, the economic and other consequences associated with that involvement, and the wider economic, political, and environmental effects of those economic effects. The chapters of this book fill these gaps by examining ports in diverse European countries like Denmark, Germany, Greece, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom and various Latin American countries, including Brazil and Jamaica. The book illustrates why Chinese seaports succeed or fail, why they have the military, economic, and other consequences that they do, and why these consequences produce or fail to generate other effects such as political influence. This book will appeal to audiences with interests in China’s overseas seaports, foreign direct investment (FDI), and infrastructure specifically and foreign direct investment, geopolitics, and the political economy of national security more generally.

The development of a European Port Policy is widely recognised as a critical component of the Common EU Transport Policy, and has been the focus of attention since the early 1990s. A coherent common EU wide port policy has not yet been achieved, but the authors of this book argue that it has a major role to play in European integration and that its significance in this context is set to increase. European Union Port Policy assesses the progress that has been made towards a comprehensive policy framework, reviewing the impact of both historical and contemporary policy initiatives - such as the recent 'port package' - before forecasting expected developments in policy making and the prospects of successfully achieving a single port policy. This book offers a unique review of port policy in the EU and will appeal to all those in academic and policy circles with an interest in both transport and European integration.

First published in 1998, this volume emerged as part of the series Plymouth Studies in Contemporary Shipping, which represents a unique collection of papers and texts edited from the leading maritime institute in Western Europe at the University of Plymouth. Covering research from a range of geographical sectors but with a particular emphasis on Western Europe, developing countries and Eastern Europe the topics covered emerge from the full range of business areas including maritime economics, policy, statistics, logistics, law and business studies. Designed for both the practising academics and the shipping and ports industry itself, this series is an original and novel contribution to the maritime debate. This particular volume focuses on ports in Poland and Eastern Europe more widely as transition economies after the fall of the Soviet Union. Susanne Ferch and Michael Roe examine their use of strategic management systems to determine whether and how the highly turbulent environment is reflected in the systems at Poland’s largest ports, Gdynia and Gdañsk. Particular focus is given to inter-port variations.

Europe And The Maritime World written by Michael B. Miller and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-08-20 with History categories.

Europe and the Maritime World: A Twentieth-Century History offers a framework for understanding globalization over the past century. Through a detailed analysis of ports, shipping and trading companies whose networks spanned the world, Michael B. Miller shows how a European maritime infrastructure made modern production and consumer societies possible. He argues that the combination of overseas connections and close ties to home ports contributed to globalization. Miller also explains how the ability to manage merchant shipping's complex logistics was central to the outcome of both world wars. He chronicles transformations in hierarchies, culture, identities and port city space, all of which produced a new and different maritime world by the end of the century.
