Continuando el proyecto iniciado con su Teología de la creación, el autor nos ofrece ahora una "antropología teológica fundamental" cuyo objetivo consiste en dar razón de la visión cristiana del hombre al nivel de sus estructuras básicas. Qué es el hombre, quén es el hombre...: éstas son, en definitva, las cuestiones abordadas en este libro. El punto de partida es la categoría bíblica "imagen de Dios" y la concepción antropológica en ella implicada. La exposición sistemática estudia seguidamente el problema alma-cuerpo: el carácter personal, libre y social del ser humano, investido de un valor absoluto y de una dignidad inviolable: su capacidad para modelar creativamente la realidad mediante el trabajo, la técnica y la cultura: su índole de criatura de Dios. En el desarrollo de esta amplia temática se presta especial atención a los planteamientos hoy vigentes y al intenso diálogo interdisciplinar que están generando: el debate mentes-cerebros-máquinas, la crisis de la idea de persona, las actuales negaciones de la libertad, el obligado paso de la "teología de las realidades terrenas" a las "teologías de lo político" (que recuperan para la noción de "progreso" los necesarios ingredientes ético-sociales), las lecturas de lo humano en clave exclusivamente biológica,etc. La redacción del libro ha estado presidida por una preocupación de fondo: lo único que, a fin de cuentas, le interesa a la fe cristiana cuando afronta el enigma de la condición humana es saber cómo ha de tratar el hombre al hombre y por qué. Y la respuesta la encuentran los creyentes en el hecho de la encarnacion de Dios: cada hombre ("imagen de Dios") tiene que ser tratado como el propio Dios, porque éste ha querido ser y dejarse tratar como hombre.
