Developing healthy sexual behaviors is critical to adolescents’ wellbeing. While more emphasis has been on negative outcomes, there are broad positive implications for physical health, mental health, intimate relationships, and identity development. Individuals often learn sexual health information from entertainment television shows, but they also may learn and enact risky sexual behaviors seen on television. This experiment tested whether viewers are more likely to engage in sexual behaviors after seeing television characters model these behaviors and sought to determine whether this enactment of behavior is attributed to characters experiencing positive or negative emotional consequences as a result of their sexual behavior. Participants were randomly assigned to view either a television show episode that depicted a positive outcome of a "friends with benefits" relationship or one that depicted a negative outcome of a "friends with benefits" relationship. Males reported being more likely to engage in a "friends with benefits" relationship after viewing this type of relationship depicted on television. Therefore, people may be more likely to enact behaviors after viewing characters engage in them on television regardless of whether the characters experience positive or negative outcomes. Males' intentions to engage in a "friends with benefits" relationship also increased after viewing the negative outcome condition. This finding demonstrates that although the protagonist of a show may experience negative outcomes as a result of her behavior, viewers may interpret this outcome differently or identify more with other characters, which can increase their intentions to engage in the behavior. Therefore, having a character experience negative outcomes as a result of engaging in a behavior will not necessarily decrease viewers' intentions to engage in that behavior.

While risky sexual behavior can lead to negative consequences such as sexually transmitted infections and unintended pregnancy, sexual behavior also is a healthy part of human development. By understanding the social and cognitive processes that influence sexual behavior choices during adolescence and young adulthood, we will be better able to promote positive sexual health and reduce risky sexual behavior and its negative consequences, included sexually transmitted infection and unintended pregnancy. This dissertation examined three sets of questions related to sexual behavior during adolescence and young adulthood. The first study used structural equation modeling and found that the data supported many of the prosocial developmental paths described by the social development model, for example a positive family and school environment predicted prosocial norms and healthy beliefs, which in turn predicted a later age of sexual initiation. The second study used latent class analysis to identify five classes of sexual behavior from ages 19 to 23. The study showed that while young adult men and women exhibit similar patterns of sexual behavior, there were important differences in the levels of individual sexual risk behaviors within the behavior patterns and in the proportion of males and females estimated to be in the Higher Risky Sex class. This study also showed that risk and protective socialization processes during adolescence impact sexual behavior during young adulthood. The third study used the 5 identified latent classes of sexual behavior, and found that these classes differentially predict health and social outcomes at age 24. These studies have several implications, including providing support for enhancing prosocial environments at the family, school, and peer levels, providing insight into specific health messaging for young adults to improve their sexual health, and the importance of contextualizing sexual behavior as one component of overall health that is linked to other areas of a person's health.

The role of psychosocial constructs such as assertiveness and self-efficacy has increasingly been acknowledged as an important component of research and interventions directed at young women’s sexual health. The female sexual subjectivity inventory (FSSI) was developed to measure five distinct factors of young women’s experiences of sexual pleasure and empowerment as agentic sexual beings: 1) sexual body esteem, 2) entitlement to sexual pleasure from a partner 3) entitlement to sexual pleasure from the self, 4) self-efficacy in achieving sexual pleasure from a partner, and 5) sexual self-reflection. Though previous research has found positive associations between higher scores on the FSSI and other constructs such as sexual well-being and condom use self-efficacy, no studies have explicitly evaluated the association between FSSI scores and adverse sexual health outcomes. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional survey of women affiliated with the University of Washington to assess the association between FSSI factors and the occurrence of three adverse sexual health outcomes in the prior 12 months: acquisition of an sexually transmitted infection, unwanted pregnancy, or taking emergency contraception (Plan B). We used multivariate logistic regression models to evaluate the association between each FSSI factor while controlling for age and estimated frequency of sexual activity. We also assessed the association between FSSI scores and self-reported orgasm frequency during partnered sexual activity. We did not find any statistically significant associations between mean score on any of the FSSI factors and adverse sexual health outcomes in the prior year. Results We found that all FSSI factors except for sexual self-reflection were positively associated with increased orgasm frequency. We further used the FSSI scale in a novel way to identify a population of women who are discordant on their levels of entitlement to pleasure from partner and self-efficacy in achieving sexual pleasure. Conclusions Though our primary analysis did not show statistically significant results, our study underscores the validity of the FSSI as a measure to assess psychosocial constructs relevant to young women’s ability to experience sexual pleasure with a partner. Our research also indicates that different FSSI factors may interact with each other to inform women’s sexual behavior, and implications for future research using this scale are discussed.

Researchers have devoted considerable attention to identifying psychosocial correlates of adolescent sexual behavior because many adolescents who engage in sexual intercourse are at risk for unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. One key correlate of adolescent sexual intercourse is unconventionality, which has been defined as rebellion against traditional socializing agents (e.g., family, school). However, researchers have recently expanded the construct of unconventionality to include both positive and negative types (labeled constructive deviance and destructive deviance, respectively) and have suggested these two types of deviance are differentially related to adolescent problem behaviors. The current study examined the relation of constructive and destructive deviance to levels of sexual experience and risky sexual behavior in older adolescents (N = 484) recruited from introductory psychology courses. Results of structural equation modeling indicated that both types of deviance were related to risky sexual behavior but that only destructive deviance was related to sexual experience, after controlling for the effects of self-esteem, personality, and demographic variables. The results also indicated that some positive psychological characteristics were related to sexual experience and risky sexual behavior, suggesting two potential pathways for engaging in these behaviors. Researchers should continue to examine adolescent sexual behavior within a developmental context that considers both constructive and destructive aspects of such behavior.
