When sounds are in shadows, let sunshine in. 'THIS IS A VERY readable book. It is well written and full of memorable phrases and interesting ideas. It is honest: frank without being sentimental, truthful, yet positive.' Thesecomments were published in Fanfare, the quarterly magazine of the leading UK charity, Hearing Concern. The reviewer is Val Tait, awidely respected hearing therapist. 'The book is divided into short chapters, each chapter no more than two or three pages long. They are narrated from different points of view: John's; his wife Tricia's; their daughter Samantha's; John's audiologist. This gives us an all round picture of how hearing loss affects not just the person, but family, friends and colleaues too. The sections by hearing professionals are thoroughly illuminating and answer some of the questions about the strengths and limitations of hearing aids.' Over more than thirty years of progressive partial deafness, the author has noticed surprising indifference and lack of support for this increasingly common but hidden disability. Although much is now being done to encourage more action and awareness, he believes that many of us directly involved could make a difference by being more open and positive. Sharing our problems can be very effective in helping to find solutions that can lift our feelings about hearing loss out of the shadows and on to a sunnier plateau with the help of hearing professionals, support groups, hearing charities and people who are close to us.

The loss of hearing - be it gradual or acute, mild or severe, present since birth or acquired in older age - can have significant effects on one's communication abilities, quality of life, social participation, and health. Despite this, many people with hearing loss do not seek or receive hearing health care. The reasons are numerous, complex, and often interconnected. For some, hearing health care is not affordable. For others, the appropriate services are difficult to access, or individuals do not know how or where to access them. Others may not want to deal with the stigma that they and society may associate with needing hearing health care and obtaining that care. Still others do not recognize they need hearing health care, as hearing loss is an invisible health condition that often worsens gradually over time. In the United States, an estimated 30 million individuals (12.7 percent of Americans ages 12 years or older) have hearing loss. Globally, hearing loss has been identified as the fifth leading cause of years lived with disability. Successful hearing health care enables individuals with hearing loss to have the freedom to communicate in their environments in ways that are culturally appropriate and that preserve their dignity and function. Hearing Health Care for Adults focuses on improving the accessibility and affordability of hearing health care for adults of all ages. This study examines the hearing health care system, with a focus on non-surgical technologies and services, and offers recommendations for improving access to, the affordability of, and the quality of hearing health care for adults of all ages.

More and more people, also younger people, are suffering from hearing loss. Hearing loss has no age limit; once you find yourself in the middle of it, it is so important you find an adequate solution. Because rest assured: there is a solution for (almost) every hearing challenge. And the first step is to have an open mind. It was a simple infection that caused my severe hearing loss. From one second to the next, I realised how important hearing is. It has been a fascinating hearing journey. Not just for myself, but also for my partner, my family, friends, and colleagues. My Hearing Challenge! is my own story. I hope to inspire others and to help them gain insight into hearing loss, so that it can become less of a taboo. Hearing solutions can give your life a positive twist. My story is alternated with inspiring testimonies from other people who, each in their own way, dealt with hearing loss. It illustrates how the choice of a hearing aid can represent a radical and positive change in your life and that of others too. A huge thanks to Joost, Pol, Kamiel, Jiska, Arthur, Janneke, Evelien and Stijn for their collaboration! My Hearing Challenge! is a book by many people, for many people. Proceeds from the book sales will go to the good hearing cause. Bron: Flaptekst, uitgeversinformatie.

Millions of Americans experience some degree of hearing loss. The Social Security Administration (SSA) operates programs that provide cash disability benefits to people with permanent impairments like hearing loss, if they can show that their impairments meet stringent SSA criteria and their earnings are below an SSA threshold. The National Research Council convened an expert committee at the request of the SSA to study the issues related to disability determination for people with hearing loss. This volume is the product of that study. Hearing Loss: Determining Eligibility for Social Security Benefits reviews current knowledge about hearing loss and its measurement and treatment, and provides an evaluation of the strengths and weaknesses of the current processes and criteria. It recommends changes to strengthen the disability determination process and ensure its reliability and fairness. The book addresses criteria for selection of pure tone and speech tests, guidelines for test administration, testing of hearing in noise, special issues related to testing children, and the difficulty of predicting work capacity from clinical hearing test results. It should be useful to audiologists, otolaryngologists, disability advocates, and others who are concerned with people who have hearing loss.

One in seven people in the UK are said to be deaf or hard of hearing. Too often, clients are put off attending centres or have had bad experiences of services and communicating with care or teaching staff. Working through the sessions in this book will enable the reader to understand how to communicate effectively, how to treat individuals with respect and dignity in all types of settings, and how to encourage positive communication with people who have hearing difficulties. The author has used her own experience of deafness to convey the effects it can have on individuals and to give insight into how people with hearing difficulties like to communicate and be treated. Divided into twenty sessions for group training, individuals can also work through the book on their own. The information, exercises, and case studies in this book will provide the reader with the awareness and knowledge to communicate effectively with people who have hearing difficulties.
