aim of this study is to investigate the integration of digital fabrication technologies within ceramics practice to re-envisage the appropriation of cultural content in a post-discipline transformative innovative visual arts PLR inquiry. Graeme Sullivan’s (2010) Framework of Visual Arts Research is utilised as a practice-led reflexive methodology that facilitates the shifting between dissimilar bodies of knowledge. Extensive ceramic surface experimentation is undertaken through the appropriation of the Driekopseiland cultural heritage petroglyphs in conjunction with the application of digital fabrication technologies and ceramics processes. Throughout the study all experiences, processes, influences, outcomes and thoughts regarding practice are documented in a creative process journal which serves as primary data. The study shows that the application of a post-discipline transformative visual arts PLR inquiry adequately facilitates the innovative appropriation of cultural content through incorporating digital fabrication technologies with ceramics practice, enabling the promotion and preservation of cultural heritage. Transformative knowledge generation occurs when interpreting, transforming and reconstructing “lived” experiences recorded in a creative process journal.

“Transformation design” is looking for new ways to change our behavior and society through new forms of innovation. The existing user-oriented approach of design must therefore be extended to one that is society-oriented. The concept of transformation is based on the anthropologist Karl Paul Polanyi and his book The Great Transformation (1944), which described the emergence of the now almost undisputed and globally widespread western market logic: the transformation of societies with markets into market societies, which he calls “dislodgment of the markets”. Meanwhile, leading think tanks are referring to Polanyi. They are calling for a new social contract and the “re-embedding” of the market into society. What are the possible instruments and contributions of design for this new “Great Transformation”? The variety of the above questions, answers, theories, methods, ideas, and projects suggests that “transformation design” is not in fact a discipline in itself, but that it will lead to a fruitful discourse. The book attempts to form an initial position in terms of this ambitious and ethical design perspective. It also seeks to inspire the international debate to push for a project of responsible design.

A multifaceted ecological and socio-cultural crisis confronts us, and the irresponsible and unsustainable operations and actions encouraging this predicament are bound up with contemporary societal, economic, organisational, and managerial practices. The recent and on-going global economic crisis with its failures of responsibility and pervasive (or existential) threat posed to natural ecologies are among many more manifestations of a profound disintegration, unwise forms of practices, and non-integral ways of living. The current crisis, scandals, and tensions between corporations and civil society, and numerous examples of unethical practices that are partly validated by common practice have helped to intensify demands to scrutinise corporate behaviour and practices. The increasingly instrumentalised contexts and impositions of neoliberal regimes with their systemic constraint call for a rethinking of phrónêtic capacities and dispositions for wise practices in prâxis and corresponding sustainable actions. This book explores how practical wisdom can be conceptualised and applied to practices that respond to the life-worldly realities of organisations.
