Chemistry graduate education is under considerable pressure. Pharmaceutical companies, long a major employer of synthetic organic chemists, are drastically paring back their research divisions to reduce costs. Chemical companies are opening new research and development facilities in Asia rather than in the United States to take advantage of growing markets and trained workforces there. Universities, especially public universities, are under significant fiscal constraints that threaten their ability to hire new faculty members. Future federal funding of chemical research may be limited as the federal budget tightens. All of these trends have major consequences for the education of chemistry graduate students in U.S. universities. To explore and respond to these intensifying pressures, the Board on Chemical Sciences and Technology held a workshop in Washington, DC, on January 23-24 2012, titled "Graduate Education in Chemistry in the Context of a Changing Environment." The workshop brought together representatives from across the chemical enterprise, representing leaders and future leaders of academia, industry, and government. The goal of the workshop was not to come to conclusions, but to have an open and frank discussion about critical issues affecting chemistry graduate education, such as the attraction and retainment of the most able students to graduate education, financial stressors on the current support model and their implications for the future model, competencies needed in the changing job market for Ph.D. chemists, and competencies needed to address societal problems such as energy and sustainability. Challenges in Chemistry Graduate Education: A Workshop Summary is organized into six chapters and summarizes the workshop on "Graduate Education in Chemistry in the Context of a Changing Environment."

The Ph.D. Process offers the essential guidance that students in the biological and physical sciences need to get the most out of their years in graduate school. Drawing upon the insights of numerous current and former graduate students, this book presents a rich portrayal of the intellectual and emotional challenges inherent in becoming a scientist, and offers the informed, practical advice a "best friend" would give about each stage of the graduate school experience. What are the best strategies for applying to a graduate program? How are classes conducted? How should I choose an advisor and a research project? What steps can I take now to make myself more "employable" when I get my degree? What goes on at the oral defense? Through a balanced, thorough examination of issues ranging from lab etiquette to research stress, the authors--each a Ph.D. in the sciences--provide the vital information that will allow students to make informed decisions all along the way to the degree. Headlined sections within each chapter make it fast and easy to look up any subject, while dozens of quotes describing personal experiences in graduate programs from people in diverse scientific fields contribute invaluable real-life expertise. Special attention is also given to the needs of international students. Read in advance, this book prepares students for each step of the graduate school experience that awaits them. Read during the course of a graduate education, it serves as a handy reference covering virtually all major issues and decisions a doctoral candidate is likely to face. The Ph.D. Process is the one book every graduate student in the biological and physical sciences can use to stay a step ahead, from application all the way through graduation.

Graduate Education in the Chemical Sciences is a summary of the December 1999 workshop, "Graduate Education in the Chemical Sciences: Issues for the 21st Century." This workshop discussed the various features of graduate education in chemical science and technology. Using case histories and their individual experiences, speakers examined the current status of graduate education in the chemical sciences, identified problems and opportunities, and discussed possible strategies for improving the system. The discussion was oriented toward the goal of generating graduates who are well prepared to advance the chemical sciences in academia, government, and industry in the next 5 to 10 years.

The study of macroscopic and microscopic phenomena throughout chemical systems in terms of the principles, practices, and concepts of physics such as motion, energy, force, thermodynamics, time, quantum chemistry, statistical mechanics, analytical dynamics, and chemical equilibria is what is referred to as the field of physical chemistry. Physical chemistry is a subfield of analytical chemistry. This book will explain the fundamentals of physical chemistry as well as the phenomena that it studies. The book demonstrates, with the help of a limited number of formulae, how the field of physical chemistry derives its concepts from the fields of physics, quantum mechanics, or mathematics, and how these fields have all contributed to our comprehension of the natural world. The theoretical underpinnings of chemistry are laid forth by the discipline of physical chemistry. In physics, it is only able to go as high as its knees, but in organic and inorganic chemistry, the other two primary subfields of chemistry, it can reach its head. The book "Physical Chemistry" is often used as a text for students just starting in the field of physical chemistry. The book wide variety of topics, including chemical bonding, wave mechanics, molecular spectroscopy, ideal and nonideal gases, the three laws of thermodynamics, thermochemistry, and solutions for nonelectrolytes. Further included are the kinetics of gas-phase processes, colloids and macromolecules, nuclear chemistry, and radiochemistry.

Becoming A Food Scientist written by Robert L. Shewfelt and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-04-23 with Technology & Engineering categories.

Becoming a Food Scientist is designed as a reservoir of ideas for those beginning a graduate education in food science or beginning a professional career in the field. Although at times it may read as a how-to manual for success in graduate school, it is meant to encourage each reader to study the research process, to challenge conventional wisdom, and to develop a career path that maximizes the probability of success both in school and beyond. The author has viewed food science graduate programs through the lenses of programs at four universities and service in numerous activities with the Institute of Food Technologists. This book is thus focused on the field of food science, but it may have relevance to other scientific disciplines. The book introduces the concept of research as process in the first chapter. Subsequent chapters focus on individual unit operations of research: idea generation, problem definition, critical evaluation of the literature, method selection, experimental design, data collection, processing and analysis, and knowledge dissemination. Successful graduate students in food science must master each of these operations. The final section of the book pushes the reader beyond graduate school into its practice in the real world. Topics covered in the maturation of a food scientist include the scientific meeting, critical thinking, science and philosophy, ethics, finding and managing the literature, planning, grantsmanship, laboratory setup and management, and career development. This book should be a meaningful companion for any graduate student in the field and those transitioning from graduate school to the food science profession.

Analytical chemistry's five main subfields are covered in depth, from their underlying principles and principles of application through their respective computations, instruments, and chemical processes. Analytical chemistry topics such as precipitation and combinations are covered in the book. The fundamentals, practical applications, and connections to related fields are emphasized. This book is broken down into chapters that each details a specific analytical chemistry technique. The first six chapters cover the fundamental principles of analytical chemistry and provide a solid foundation for the rest of the book. The book continues with a discussion of the basic concepts and some practical applications of ultraviolet (UV), infrared light nuclear protons, electromagnetic resonance, as well as mass spectroscopy (MS). Environmental contamination from engine emissions, metals such as aluminum and iron metalworking, corrosion, upper-atmosphere ozone-involving reactions, and strategies for reducing air and water pollution have just some of the environmental-chemistry-related topics which are discussed. Both learners and experts in the field of chemistry and environmental science will find this book to be an indispensable resource. This text is written for undergraduate students taking their first analytical chemistry course, with a focus on easier courses that cater to chemistry and life/health science disciplines.
