Theology is an explication, im-plication, and com-plication of the Christian perception of truth and value. The occurrence of this perception takes place in following the story of the Gospel, which remains open and organic, unable to be closed. Every formation of a closed system has to be exceeded on the way to a post-systematic theology. The first part of this work deals with redefining basic concepts from a phenomenological perspective and from within a narrative ontology. Key terms such as relation, way-formational line, event, time, space, sign, metaphor, concept, name, model, theory, coherence, causality, contingence, subject, and truth, are explored and reworked. The main portion of the work delves into the threefold self-presentation of God in the perception of truth and value as displayed in the Gospel. The work concludes by taking up the consequences of the relationship between faith and religion, historicity and Holy Scripture, the concept of rationality, as well as the inter-disciplinary and academic study of theology.

In recent years the theological writings of Wolfhart Pannenberg have exerted considerable influence. However, Pannenberg's work has also been criticized for not taking seriously the postmodern challenge to traditional conceptions of rationality and truth. This volume by F. LeRon Shults argues that the popular "foundationalist" reading of Pannenberg is a misinterpretation of his methodology and shows that, in fact, the structural dynamics of Pannenberg's approach offer significant resources for the postfoundationalist task of theology in our postmodern culture. Shults begins by laying out the first comprehensive summary and interpretation of the emerging postfoundationalist model of theological rationality. He then revisits Pannenberg's theological method and finds the German theologian to be a surprising ally in the quest to reconstruct a theological rationality along postfoundationalist lines. In the course of his discussion, Shults challenges views that see the future, reason, or history as the central concept of Pannenberg's thought and offers instead a new interpretation of Pannenberg's basic theological principle as understanding and explaining all things sub ratione Dei (under the aspect of the relation to God)-an interpretation endorsed by Pannenberg himself in the book's foreword. Shults also focuses on Pannenberg's unique way of linking philosophical and systematic theology and demonstrates how the underlying reciprocity of this method can carry over into the postfoundational concern to link hermeneutics and epistemology in the postmodern context.

Warfield, Herman Bavinck, John Murray, and Cornelius Van Til. An original, comprehensive system of theology especially apropos to the post-Christendom North American context In this scholarly work Paul Hinlicky transcends the impasse between dogmatic and systematic theology by articulating and arguing a single cognitive claim: God is the One who has determined to redeem the creation by the missions of his Son and Spirit. Deploying an unusual Spirit-Son-Father trinitarian scheme, Hinlicky treats the problem of the knowledge of God and the nature of the theological discipline, and he proceeds to carefully develop his system of theology through expansive, wideranging argumentation. Each main part of his work includes discussion of the ecumenical convergences in doctrine gained over the last generation and exploration of interreligious dialogues, especially with Judaism and Islam. Throughout the book, Hinlicky engages with other theologians -- particularly with Robert Jenson s Systematic Theology -- and concludes each major section with a discussion of an alternate perspective on the subject.

This study attempts to address the historical debate over when systematic theology began. Much of the debate is centered on the definition of system and revolves around the use, or lack thereof, of external philosophical categories or language. Specific historical figures have been selected to serve as illustrations of how theological prolegomena functioned in works prior to and following the influence of Enlightenment thought. In the early chapters it will be seen that theology was neither totally saturated with, nor totally devoid of, external philosophical reference points or programmatic intentions. On the contrary, both external points of reference and programmatic intentions have played a role in theology since the church's inception. In other words, certain elements of system (e.g., logic, non-contradiction, organization) have played a role in theological investigation and construction since, at least, the second century. The last two chapters of this study demonstrate that these may not be the same influences that have marked post-Enlightenment systematics. One of the primary characteristics of pre-Enlightenment theology is its intentional focus on the life of the church. Theology, like the Scriptures, was often written for specific circumstances. Enlightenment influences significantly changed the intentions of much of theology in that theological knowledge was studied and displayed for the sake of knowledge itself. The church no longer mattered, or was at best an afterthought, in the realm of what is now seen as the domain of academic theology.

Knowledge transmission and generation belong to the core mission of the public university. In democratic South Africa, the transformation of these processes and practices in higher education has become an urgent and contested task. The Faculty of Theology at the University of the Free State has already done some original work on the implications of these for theology. One area of investigation that has not yet received due attention concerns the role of theological disciplines, and especially the relation between academic disciplines and societal dynamics. This research project addresses the challenge and this volume reflects the intellectual endeavour of lectures, research fellows and a post-graduate student associated with the faculty. Each theological discipline has its own history and has already experienced reconstruction, both globally and in South Africa. Some of these genealogical developments and re-envisioning are mapped by the contributions in this volume. The critical questions addressed are: what are the contours of the (post)apartheid condition and what are the implications for responsible disciplinary practices in theology? The chapters convey an impression of the vitality of theology at the University of the Free State and in South Africa and give expression to fundamental shifts that have taken place in theological disciplines, and also of future tasks. This research project aims to stimulate reflection on responsible and innovative disciplinary practices of theology in South Africa, which, we envisage, will contribute to social justice and human flourishing. -Rian Venter, University of the Free State
