In diesem Essay wollen wir uns einem jungen Phänomen widmen, das viele Namen hat. Bezeichnungen wie "Post-Wahrheit", "post-truth" und "postfaktisches Zeitalter" wie auch "Krisis der Rationalität" oder "Das Ende der Eindeutigkeit" (Zygmunt Bauman) sollen helfen, der gefühlt neuen Situation zu begegnen. Die Medien und die politische Rhetorik sind zunehmend von "alternativen Fakten" bzw. "fake news" geprägt, das Vertrauen der Adressat*innen geht verloren. Auch viele andere gesellschaftlichen Bereiche sind von diesem bemerkenswerten Zweifel an der Objektivität und der "Realität der Realität" (Luc Boltanski) durchsetzt. Für viele Autor*innen repräsentiert die Situation der Post-Wahrheit die postmoderne Situation schlechthin. Man bezieht sich dabei vielfach auf die Werke von Bruno Latour und Zygmunt Bauman oder neuere Studien zu den Auswirkungen der Virtualität. Aber die post-faktische Haltung, die den Fakten und Realitäten vorwirft, per se nur der Willkür und Manipulation zu dienen, weist auch bemerkenswerte Parallelen zu den konstruktivistischen Setzungen in den Sozialwissenschaften auf. Diesen theoretischen Parallelen soll genauer nachgegangen werden. Auch die wissenschaftsinternen Debatten um die Objektivität von "wissenschaftlichen Tatsachen" und die gesellschaftliche Macht, die mit dieser Objektivität verknüpft ist, müssen in diesem Zusammenhang näher betrachtet werden. Nicht zuletzt wird zudem ein historischer Rückblick fruchtbar sein. Dieser zeigt, inwiefern die offensichtlichen oder vorerst nur antizipierten prekären Folgen der Post-Wahrheit für demokratische Politik bereits etablierte historische Vorgänger haben. So sehr die postmodernen Wurzeln der Post-Wahrheit antitotalitär gedacht waren, so sehr hat dieselbe Post-Wahrheit paradoxerweise durchaus auch totalitäre Mitbegründer.

The essays contained in this volume were originally delivered as papers to a conference on the German-language broadcasting of the BBC, held in London in 2002. For over sixty years, the BBC German Service was Britain's most authoritative voice to the German-speaking world, representing a virtual paradigm of British cultural and political attitudes towards Germany and Austria - and helping to define their perceptions of Britain and the British. Despite the BBC's enormous cultural standing and influence, however, this volume is the first to evaluate the Corporation's German-language broadcasting since the BBC German Service was closed down in 1999. The essays fall into three broad categories: German-language broadcasting during the Second World War, broadcasting to Germany and Austria during the Cold War, and finally a series of personal accounts from former employees of the Service. The volume will be of interest to scholars and students of broadcasting (including media studies) as well as those involved in German Studies and in German and Austrian Exile Studies.

although Hans Urs von Balthasar’s earliest publication is from 1925, and although he was a mature forty years old in 1945, there is a deficiency in the secondary literature regarding his early literature, its historical backgrounds and non-theological sources. In this study Balthasar is presented in relation to the various contexts in which he was both drawing upon and responding to from the 1920s to the 1940s. The major contexts analyzed here are the broad central European Germanophone cultural context, the Germanophone Catholic cultural context, the German studies context, the French Catholic renewal literature and theology of the early 20th-century, the popular journal Stimmen der Zeit, Neo-Scholasticism, early 20th-century French Catholic culture, Swiss fascism, National Socialist literature, the Renouveau Catholique, the George-Kreis and many others. Balthasar’s early anti-Semitism and some of the problematic aspects of his early work are also addressed in this study. His understanding of the modern age, his relationships with some key intellectual figures and his later reflections on his early work are also introduced. The book offers a comprehensive study of Balthasar’s early intellectual development.
