The British East India Company gradually displaced other powers and brought into existence a British administrative system over most of India, with a need to establish and maintain both official and commercial mail systems. Although the Indian Post Office was established in 1837, Asia's first adhesive stamp, the Scinde Dawk, was introduced in 1852 by Sir Bartle Frere, the British East India Company's administrator of the province of Sind. Sir Geoffrey Rothe Clarke was a senior civil servant in British India from 1903 to 1925. His book 'The Post Office of India and its Story' is his historical record of the evolution of postal services in British controlled India. He captures the pivotal moment when Postal services were formalized and brought under centralized control under a Director General. Clarke traces this journey from the enactment of the Post Office Act of 1854 to the subsequent growth of Indian postal services until the time of his writing the book in 1923. It is a fascinating read with a great deal of detail about the operations of the postal services in India.

Approximately 5,400 postal cards and 1,200 postal envelopes with pre-printed indicia and cancellations from mailing reflect the history of the Indian postal system. They range in date from 1803 to 1920, although the bulk are from 1830 through 1870, when the Indian postal system went through a rapid series of changes. The postal system itself was established under British rule in 1837, so the pieces from before that year represent both official indicia issued by zamindars (government tax collectors) as well as privately Indian-owned "dawk" postal delivery companies. The collection dwindles after the 1870s, since by then India's postal service had for the most part been regulated, and each of the issues was used heavily and is not as rare as the indicia with shorter issue-lives. There is a small number of cards and envelopes with cancelled stamps. The collection also contains nineteen guides to postal history auctions from 1978-1983.
