Excerpt from Posthumous and Other Poems The poems contained in this volume were written by the Author at various periods of her life, between the years 1817 and 1845. Some of them have already appeared in print in periodical and other publications; the greater number, however, are strictly Posthumous, and appear before the public for the first time. They were written in moments of leisure and relaxation, and so little importance was attached to them, that in few instances were copies retained; they were often not even transcribed, the original manuscript being sent to the friends for whom they were written. The Editor takes this opportunity of returning his thanks to the possessors of these poems, for their great kindness in sending them to him for publication; he believes that many more exist, and begs to repeat his request that they may be forwarded to him, to the care of Messrs. Seeley, Bumside, and Seeley, as this volume will probably be followed by a second series. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Posthumous Poems Restore. There passed into our hands also other pieces which we have reason to believe the poet wished to suppress, or on mature reflection would have so wished. These we have not printed. Our desire has been to be loyal to his memory, and we are here giving to the world nothing but what we believe that he would con sent to give if he could direct our conduct. The principal exception to the chronological arrangement adopted in this volume is the plac ing at the forefront of the book the eleven border ballads which Mr. Wise was so fortunate as to discover among the mss. Which he bought in 1909 from watts-dunton.1 The rough drafts of these ballads were found among mss. Of the years 1862 and 1863, and the character of the handwriting, as well as of the paper, leads us to believe that they belong to this period. With them were found several of the ballads published at last in the Third Series of Poems and Ballads (1889) but provisionally set up in type in 1877. There is no doubt that Swinburne hesitated long as to whether he should give to the public any of his more primitive border ballads. At an early age he had been attracted to this class of poetry by the study of Scott's Border M instrelsy of 1802-3, an examination of which. After Shelley's death in the Gulf of Spezia in July 1822 Mary Shelley (then aged 25) stayed on in Italy for a year before returning to London with her son Percy. Posthumous poems, edited from manuscript, was the initial step in the work of publicizing Shelley's poetry that was to occupy her for the next fifteen years. It contains the first publication of much of the work of the last period of his life, including Julian and Maddalo (the philosophical Shelley/Byron eclogue) and his last poem, The triumph of life. It also includes many short pieces (often expressions of his fraught emotional life) and translations of classical and modern literature. In publishing his own poetry Shelley had tended to print major works, either on their own, or supported by lesser poems; Posthumous poems takes a more comprehensive view. Readers could begin to gauge the true range and value of his work. Sir Timothy Shelley intervened, however; Posthumous poems was suppressed. Of the 500 copies printed, 191 were destroyed.

Excerpt from Musings in Solitude: A Posthumous Collection of Miscellaneous Poems Oh, no my proud heart will surely conquer O'er feelings so racked with sorrow and pain, And my life can appear to be joyous with pleasure, Though the sorrow to me may rankle the same. I will meet, as it comes, the world with its follies, I will plunge mid the vain and worthless of heart, Whilst a voice perhaps may whisper in sorrow and sadness I might have chosen a better part.
