Excerpt from Post-Mortem Examinations When medical men had fewer matters to consider and the content of the sciences was less, more time was given to minor things, among which were terms and words. Perhaps there is no better way of clear ing our thinking than by sharply analyzing our words, so that these minor matters still have their value. I have selected the term postmortem for rather definite reasons, in spite of the fact that others prefer other words, and I must confess some of these sound quite as well. Autopsy, surely the easiest word to speak, has rather too suggestive a meaning - that of seeing one's self. We have seen postmortems where it truly described what oc curred. Imagine you had to write a postmortem containing statements like these? "We were unable to resolve the outage as quickly as we would have hoped because our decision making was impacted by extreme stress." "We spent two hours repeatedly applying the fix that worked during the previous outage, only to find out that it made no difference in this one." "We did not communicate openly about an escalating outage that was caused by our botched deployment because we thought we were about to lose our jobs." While the above scenarios are entirely realistic, it's hard to find many postmortem write-ups that even hint at these "human factors." Their absence is, in part, due to the social stigma associated with publicly acknowledging their contribution to outages. And yet, people dealing with outages are clearly subject to physical exhaustion and psychological stress, not to mention impaired reasoning due to a host of cognitive biases. This report focuses on the effects and mitigation of stress and cognitive biases during outages and postmortems. This "human postmortem" is as important as the technical one, as it enables building more resilient systems and teams, and ultimately reduces the duration and severity of outages.

As elected coroners were replaced by medical examiners with scientific training, the American public became fascinated with their work. From the grisly investigations showcased on highly rated television shows like CSI to the bestselling mysteries that revolve around forensic science, medical examiners have never been so visible--or compelling. They, and they alone, solve the riddle of suspicious death and the existential questions that come with it. Why did someone die? Could it have been prevented? Should someone be held accountable? What are the implications of ruling a death a suicide, a homicide, or an accident? Can medical examiners unmask the perfect crime? Postmortem goes deep inside the world of medical examiners to uncover the intricate web of social, legal, and moral issues in which they operate. Stefan Timmermans spent years in a medical examiner's office following cases, interviewing examiners, and watching autopsies. While he relates fascinating cases here, he is also more broadly interested in the cultural authority and responsibilities that come with being a medical examiner. How medical examiners speak to the living on behalf of the dead is Timmermans's subject, revealed here in the day-to-day lives of the examiners themselves. "Postmortem is a wake-up call to forensic pathology. . . .This book should be viewed as provocative, rather than threatening, and should be a stimulus for important discussions and action by the forensic pathology community."--Journal of the American Medical Association

Recent crime fiction increasingly transcends national boundaries, with investigators operating across countries and continents. Frequently, the detective is a migrant or comes from a transcultural background. To solve the crime, the investigator is called upon to decipher the meaning(s) hidden in clues and testimonies that require transcultural forms of understanding. For the reader, the investigation discloses new interpretive methods and processes of social investigation, often challenging facile interpretations of the postcolonial world order. Under the rubric 'postcolonial postmortems', this collection of essays seeks to explore the tropes, issues and themes that characterise this emergent form of crime fiction. But what does the 'postcolonial' bring to the genre apart from the well-known, and valid, discourses of resistance, subversion and ethnicity? And why 'postmortems'? A dissection and medical examination of a body to determine the cause of death, the 'postmortem' of the postcolonial not only alludes to the investigation of the victim's remains, but also to the body of the individual text and its contexts. This collection interrogates literary concepts of postcoloniality and crime from transcultural perspectives in the attempt to offer new critical impulses to the study of crime fiction and postcolonial literatures. International scholars offer insights into the 'postcolonial postmortems' of a wide range of texts by authors from Africa, South Asia, the Asian and African Diaspora, and Australia, including Robert G. Barrett, Unity Dow, Wessel Ebersohn, Romesh Gunesekera, Kazuo Ishiguro, Sujata Massey, Alexander McCall Smith and Michael Ondaatje.
