Potato Physiology provides perspective and knowledge on the biological behavior and potentials of the potato plant. Organized into 15 chapters, this book focuses on tuber development physiology, biochemistry, and anatomy. This text also covers topics on physiological and biochemical aspects of photosynthesis, photoassimilate partitioning, respiration, tuberization, as well as carbohydrate and protein metabolisms. It elucidates potato's rest period, the stage when growth is inhibited as a result of endogenous causes, and the tubers' disorders, environmental responses, frost hardiness, and tissue culture. This text provides a worldwide perspective and is organized and presented to be useful to graduate students, teachers, and potato investigators.

In the past 15-20 years major discoveries have been concluded on potato biology and biotechnology. Important new tools have been developed in the area of molecular genetics, and our understanding of potato physiology has been revolutionized due to amenability of the potato to genetic transformation. This technology has impacted our understanding of the molecular basis of plant-pathogen interaction and has also opened new opportunities for the use of the potato in a variety of non-food biotechnological purposes. This book covers the potato world market as it expands further into the new millennium. Authors stress the overriding need for stable yields to eliminate human hunger and poverty, while considering solutions to enhance global production and distribution. It comprehensively describes genetics and genetic resources, plant growth and development, response to the environment, tuber quality, pests and diseases, biotechnology and crop management. Potato Biology is the most valuable reference available for all professionals involved in the potato industry, plant biologists and agronomists. Offers an understanding of the social, economic and market factors that influence production and distribution Discusses developments and useful traits in transgenic biology and genetic engineering The first reference entirely devoted to understanding new advances in potato biology and biotechnology

Students, researchers, scientists, potato growers, readers, libraries and others need some new knowledge and information about potato crop. Therefore, the scientific basis for improving potato production is needed. One of the major objectives for this series in the title (Importance of Potato Crop in the World) has been to give more information and knowledge as a scientific basis for improving potato production through the world. Therefore, I summarized and presented some new data in 4 volumes in this series. Very famous journals like Potato Research, Irish Journal of Agricultural, Food Research, Annals of Botany, Plant Biotechnology and others were used as resources to support our information. VOLUME 1: Potato Crop Physiology (1) (Scientific review) Chapter 1: Importance of potato crop in the world. Chapter 2: Some physiological review in potato plant. Chapter 3: Tuber initiation and tuber growth in potato plant. VOLUME 2: Potato Crop Physiology (2) (Studies under Field and Green House Conditions) Chapter 1: Introduction Chapter 2: New studies under field conditions Chapter 3: New studies on isolated plants under green house conditions. Chapter 4: General Conclusions. VOLUME 3: Potato Crop Physiology (3) (Studies under Field Conditions) Chapter 1: Introduction Chapter 2: First Study Under field Conditions. Chapter 3: Second Study Under Field Conditions Chapter 4: General Conclusions VOLUME 4: Potato Crop Physiology (4) (Different Scientific Studies) Chapter 1: INTRODUCTION Chapter 2: Non destructive studies and observations on growth of individual tubers. Chapter 3: Radiation technique about the relationship between NAA + BAP application and translocation of 14C into the tubers. Chapter 4: Epinasty of potato leaves caused by application of PGRs to the foliage with anatomical studies. Chapter 5: Radiometric studies on potato canopies. Chapter 6: General review about potato tissue culture. Chapter 7: General Conclusions Each chapter contained literature review separately with results and discussions. Hopefully, from this series to give some scientific contribution in the field of knowledge of potato crop regarding productivity, morphological and physiological characters. I am pleased to receive comments from scientists and readers to develop this work in next edition. I am indebted to Professors Geof R. Sagar and E.R.B. Oxley my supervisors (School of Biological Sciences, Bangor University, Wales, UK) for their encouragement, suggestions, fair comments and clarity of thinking in guiding my work and study in UK. I am particularly indebted to Mr. E.R.B. Oxley who taught me the radiometric measurements and for his patience during his supervision on my study. I am pleased to record my thanks to Dr. C. Marshall for his advice and encouragement during the period of the work and for his reading of and comments on the manuscript of my thesis. I am most grateful to the technical staff of the School of Plant Biology; in particular, Mr. Gareth Williams who helped me in the radiation work. I am also grateful to ICI (UK) for providing some samples of the PGRs, Paclobutrazol and Tuba for supporting my work. Finally, special thanks to my wife, sons and daughters for tolerating with me of my long absence from home during the preparation of this series. Prof. Dr. Hammad Nawaf Farhan 15th August 2016

Students, researchers, scientists, potato growers, readers, libraries, consumers and others need some new knowledge and information about potato crop. Therefore, the scientific basis for improving potato production is needed. One of the major objectives for this series in the title (Importance of Potato Crop in the World) has been to give more information and knowledge as a scientific basis for improving potato production through the world. Therefore, this volume investigated new contributions towards an understanding of the role of PGRS, Nitrogen and chitting tubers on tuberization and yield of potatoes under British weather conditions. Very famous journals like Potato Research, Irish Journal of Agricultural, Food Research, Annals of Botany, Plant Biotechnology and others were used as resources to support our information. Two field experiments were conducted to study response of potato yield (Pentland Crown) to nitrogen fertilizers and plant growth regulators. Experiments were set out in a complete randomized block design. First study concentrated on time of application with a mixture of NAA 40mg/l + BAP 4mg/l pre planting and at tuberization as a first factor. Second factor was application of nitrogen fertilizer (0, 100, 200 kg/ha). Third factor was chitting tuber seeds under short and long day conditions. Second study designed as a factorial experiment to study the interaction between time of application of N fertilizer at 100kg/ha (Nitram 34.5 %) and mixture of NAA 40mg/l + BAP 4mg/l pre planting, at tuberization and post tuberization on yield. It is concluded that tuber yield of potatoes can be regarded as the result of summation of many developmental processes stolon initiation, stolon development, the proportion of stolons which establish tubers, the growth rate of initiated tubers and duration of growth. Further investigations are described in next volume 4 (Chapter 2) which was made in order to study the effect of mixtures of NAA+BAP on the growth rate of individual growing tubers when applied directly or indirectly to the tubers, under field and greenhouse conditions.
