Este livro busca discutir sobre as potencialidades da infraestrutura verde para mitigação de enchentes e poluição dos corpos hídricos na cidade do Rio de Janeiro. Para descortinar essas problemáticas de ordem ambiental, foi elaborada uma retrospectiva sobre as principais transformações feitas pela sociedade sobre o ambiente natural para construção da cidade "espremida" entre o mar e a montanha, e como tais modificações foram responsáveis pelos problemas em questão. Além da extensa e diversificada bibliografia sobre o Rio de Janeiro, este livro também traz um aporte teórico sobre o conceito de infraestrutura verde desde precursores como Howard, Olmstead (século XIX); McHarg, Spirn, Hough, (século XX); até autores contemporâneos como Benedict, McMahon, Beatley, Minke e Lancaster. A pesquisa também se estende às especificidades de tipologias de infraestrutura verde aplicadas à esfera local: telhados verdes, jardins verticais, jardins de chuva e alagados construídos. A partir de exemplos práticos nacionais e internacionais, a discussão gira em torno de como tais tipologias têm sido incorporadas no âmbito do planejamento urbano e ambiental. Esses dispositivos têm como propósito reequilibrar o ciclo hidrológico das águas em cidades adensadas, comprometidas pela impermeabilização do solo ou com sistemas de infraestrutura deficitários. São soluções de múltiplos propósitos que trazem resiliência para as cidades e reestabelecem o equilíbrio entre o ambiente construído e o natural.

This contributed volume analyzes flooding scenarios in Brazilian cities using a geographic and spatiotemporal approach to explore impacts and ways to mitigate future disasters. The problem of urban flooding is growing in Brazilian cities due to the increasing number of natural disasters in the context of global climate change; this is a topic that poses challenges to urban planners and academics. Through three sections, this volume offers theoretical-conceptual, methodological and technical case studies, as well as cases that explore urban socio-environmental problems associated with flooding. Throughout the book, the concepts of risk, vulnerability and adaptation are used to explore future flood scenarios in Brazil. The integrated vision offered in this volume covers the floods themselves, evaluation of flood impacts, and the management process before, during, and after the flood event. The case studies presented here elucidate the concept of comprehensive urban flood management, offering a technical and diagnostic basis for the problem in different cities in Brazil. The present and future challenges presented by these chapters offer widely-transferable lessons that can be applied to making cities around the world more sustainable and disaster-resilient.

Quando o espaço urbano se revitaliza, se refuncionaliza e se consagra pelo seu embelezamento e criação de imagens sínteses, também multiplica suas culturas, que estão sempre se buscando, pois o moderno não vive sem o tradicional e o tradicional está sempre à espreita do moderno. O Espaço Estação não só se insere nas dinâmicas de refuncionalizações ocorrentes na área central, como também as anuncia, enquanto é por elas anunciado. Em outras palavras, os turistas que o visitam são convocados para conhecer as outras áreas centrais revitalizadas. Mas se os turistas primeiro visitarem essas áreas serão incentivados a visitá-lo, pois é expressão de revitalização. Portanto, essas estratégias permitem que, ao se reinventarem, a cidade de Curitiba precisa partir para um tipo de estratégia política de "venda" da imagem da cidade que incorpore cidadãos ainda excluídos, por meio de, por exemplo, cursos para qualificação de agentes,, estimulando-os a descobrirem em suas comunidades o que pode ser valorizado como produto turístico. Desse modo, em vez de o roteiro turístico oficial se desviar dos lugares onde moram pessoas com baixo poder aquisitivo, passará a incluí-los, aproveitando para diversificar, talvez, com outras imagens sínteses de Curitiba. Acredita-se, assim, que as atividades de lazer e turismo existentes na cidade de Curitiba podem ser potencializadas pela dinamização social do espaço a ser oferecida a todos os cidadãos.
