Kabupaten Seram Bagian Barat (SBB) merupakan salah satu daerah pemekaran di wilayah Provinsi Maluku berdasarkan Undang-Undang Nomor 40 Tahun 2003. Kabupaten ini merupakan salah satu kabupaten terdekat dengan ibu kota Provinsi Maluku, yakni berjarak ± 100 km (BKPMD Maluku 2006). Hasil hutan bukan kayu (HHBK) memiliki nilai sosial dan ekonomi yang penting bagi masyarakat yang menggantungkan hidup mereka pada HHBK yang merupakan mata pencaharian utama masyarakat sekitar hutan. Disamping itu, dengan adanya kegiatan produksi dan pengolahan HHBK, maka dapat menyerap tenaga kerja dalam jumlah yang cukup besar sehingga dapat mengurangi angka pengangguran. Kebijakan dan strategi pemasaran HHBK harus mengutamakan pengembangan pemasaran dan pengembangan produk HHBK, dengan melaksanakan kebijakan: 1) Peningkatan kuantitas dan kualitas produksi HHBK; 2) Penguatan informasi pemasaran; 3) Peningkatan kualitas SDM petani melalui kegiatan pembinaan dan penyuluhan; 4) Peningkatan pemberian bantuan modal usaha; 5) Peningkatan kegiatan promosi pada tingkat provinsi dan nasional; 6) dan Penciptaan suatu mekanisme pengurusan izin yang mudah dan cepat. Pemanfaatan hasil hutan bukan kayu haruslah menjadi inti dari pemanfaatan hasil hutan. Disamping dapat melestarikan hutan secara umum, pemanfaatan hasil hutan bukan kayu lebih diartikan sebagai pemanfaatan secara berkelanjutan dari hutan tanpa tegakannya atau memanfaatkan hasil sampingan dari pohon atau hasil hutan lainnya. Pemanfaatan hasil hutan bukan kayu dapat menjadi kegiatan pokok dari pemanfatan hasil hutan pada mekanisme pengelolaan hutan oleh masyarakat seperti hutan desa. Dalam pengelolaannya, hal utama yang harus diketahui adalah potensi dari hasil hutan bukan kayu yang terdapat pada suatu kawasan hutan. Buku ini mengulas tentang potensi HHBK dalam wilayah SBB yang dapat dijadikan informasi dasar yang jika dikelola dengan baik dapat memberikan tambahan pendapatan bagi masyarakat serta menjadi salah satu sumber pendapatan daerah terutama yang berasal dari minyak Kayu Putih, Damar, Rotan, Bambu dan Nira.

This book presents a technical review of ecological and life history information on a range of Bornean wildlife species, aimed at identifying what makes these species sensitive to timber harvesting practices and associated impacts. It addresses three audiences: 1) those involved in assessing and regulating timber harvesting activities in Southeast Asia, 2) those involved in trying to achieve conservation goals in the region, and 3) those undertaking research to improve multipurpose forest management. This book shows that forest management can be improved in many simple ways to allow timber extraction and wildlife conservation to be more compatible than under current practices. The recommendations can also be valuable to the many governmental and non-governmental organisations promoting sustainable forest management and eco-labelling. Finally, it identifies a number of shortcomings and gaps in knowledge, which the hope can interest the scientific community and promote further research. This review is, an important scientific step toward understanding and improving sustainable forestry practices for long-term biodiversity conservation. Even in the short term, however, significant improvements can be made to improve both conservation and the efficiency of forest management, and there is no need to delay action due to a perceived lack of information. In the longer term it is expected that the recommendations from this review will be implemented, and that further research will continue to help foster an acceptable balance among the choices needed to maintain healthy wildlife populations and biodiversity in a productive forest estate.

Ethnoecology has blossomed in recent years into an important science because of the realization that the vast body of knowledge contained in both indigenous and folk cultures is being rapidly lost as natural ecosystems and cultures are being destroyed by the encroachment of development. Ethnobotany and ethnozoology both began largely with direct observations about the ways in which people used plants and animals and consisted mainly of the compilation of lists. Recently, these subjects have adopted a much more scientific and quantitative methodology and have studied the ways in which people manage their environment and, as a consequence, have used a much more ecological approach. This manual of ethnobotanical methodology will become an essential tool for all ethnobiologists and ethnoecologists. It fills a significant gap in the literature and I only wish it had been available some years previously so that I could have given it to many of my students. I shall certainly recommend it to any future students who are interested in ethnoecology. I particularly like the sympathetic approach to local peoples which pervades this book. It is one which encourages the ethnobotanical work by both the local people themselves and by academically trained researchers. A study of this book will avoid many of the arrogant approaches of the past and encourage a fair deal for any group which is being studied. This manual promotes both the involvement oflocal people and the return to them of knowledge which has been studied by outsiders.
