Luka perineum terjadi secara spontan, penyebab utamanya adalah karena persalinan tidak dipimpin sebagaimana mestinya, persalinan dengan ekstraksi vakum, ekstraksi cunam, dan embriotomy. Pada umumnya semua luka baru seperti luka sayatan atau area episiotomi yang membutuhkan waktu penyembuhan sekitar 6 sampai 7 hari. Infeksi perineum akan timbul apabila melakukan perawatan perineum yang tidak benar sehingga mengakibatkan kondisi lembab pada perineum dikarenakan lokhea. Hal ini sangat menunjang perkembangan bakteri. Infeksi pada perineum dapat merusak jaringan sel dan dapat menghambat proses penyembuhan luka. Pencegahan infeksi dapat dilakukan dengan menjaga kebersihan luka jahitan, mengganti pembalut, dan menggunakan pengobatan komplementer menggunakan tanaman herbal yang dapat mengurangi penggunaan obat–obatan medis. Salah satu pengobatan menggunakan tanaman herbal yaitu antiseptik dengan daun sirih merah (Piper crocatum) dalam sediaan hydrogel. Daun sirih merah mengandung senyawa aktif yang berperan sebagai antibakteri dan antiinflamasi yang dapat membantu mempercepat penyembuhan luka perineum dan mencegah terjadinya infeksi dengan menghambat pertumbuhan bakteri penyebab infeksi pada ibu postpartum. Buku ini hadir untuk menjadikan inovasi baru dalam pengobatan herbal dengan bahan dasar daun sirih merah (Piper crocatum) dengan sediaan hydrogel sehingga meningkatkan keefektivitasan dalam menggunakan obat herbal agar lebih mudah untuk dikonsumsi atau diaplikasikan pada masyarakat yang membutuhkan.
