This Open Access volume aims to methodologically improve our understanding of biodiversity by linking disciplines that incorporate remote sensing, and uniting data and perspectives in the fields of biology, landscape ecology, and geography. The book provides a framework for how biodiversity can be detected and evaluated—focusing particularly on plants—using proximal and remotely sensed hyperspectral data and other tools such as LiDAR. The volume, whose chapters bring together a large cross-section of the biodiversity community engaged in these methods, attempts to establish a common language across disciplines for understanding and implementing remote sensing of biodiversity across scales. The first part of the book offers a potential basis for remote detection of biodiversity. Different dimensions of biodiversity are increasingly appreciated as critical for maintaining the functions of ecosystems and their services to humans. More recently, with the emergence of functional biogeography, functional diversity is of particular interest due to its strong links with ecosystem processes such as carbon, water and energy exchange, and climate mitigation. The multi-form diversity varies in space and time. Understanding this variation across scales is important for tracking the resilience of Earth’s ecosystem, and the information on the ecosystem structural features provides necessary foundations for monitoring, predicting the ecosystem functioning patterns and process of ecosystems from individual unit to its whole in a holistic manner. Rapid biodiversity change at a global scale requires enhanced monitoring tools to predict how shifting environmental conditions might alter species' extinction risk. Emerging remote sensing tools are essential to these efforts and provide the sole mechanism to detect environmental changes and their potential consequences for biodiversity rapidly. Here, I assess the extent to which remote sensing measurements predict species richness globally and within regions, facilitating the establishment of a single framework for monitoring diversity worldwide. I assembled global remote sensing metrics and data on diversity gradients to construct and cross-validate models predicting species richness of birds and mammals within and among the world's biogeographic zones. Enhanced vegetation Index (EVI), land surface temperature (LST), the first principal component of habitat heterogeneity, and an interaction between energy and habitat heterogeneity are important remotely-sensed environmental measurements for predicting trends of species richness of birds and mammals at all scales, although the intensity of the relationship differs between groups and grain sizes. However, a global model does not explain differences in species richness of birds between distinct zoogeographical realms, indicating a possible threshold in biodiversity change prediction before onset of novel environmental conditions. Measuring potential nonlinear changes in species richness is a useful application of the essential biodiversity variables (EBV) framework for operational monitoring of global and regional biodiversity. The continued production of reliable and consistent remote sensing will facilitate further exploration of current and upcoming drivers of biodiversity change and will help improve macroecological models.

Forest resources require careful management and planning as they are under increasing pressure to support wood industry and conservation needs. The management of structurally complex, uneven-aged, deciduous-dominated forests requires detailed and accurate data on fine-scale forest attributes (e.g., gap dynamics, crown sizes, species distributions). New advances in remote sensing techniques will transform traditional forest inventory practices that have relied on expensive ground-based measurements or less accurate interpretation of aerial photography. Recently, multiple sources of high spatial resolution remote sensing data have demonstrated great potential for automated extraction of fine-scale forest attributes. In this context, my PhD research aims to utilize multi-source high spatial resolution remote sensing data to develop methods for automated extraction of fine-scale forest attributes in deciduous-dominated forests, including canopy gap identification, crown delineation, and species classification. This study was carried out in Haliburton Forest and Wildlife Reserve, an uneven-aged, deciduous-dominated forest located in the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence region of Central Ontario, Canada. Specifically, the thesis first quantified the accuracy of canopy gap segmentation and classification by integrating optical and LiDAR data. Thereafter, the thesis proposed a novel method for individual tree crown (ITC) delineation, involving multispectral watershed segmentation and multi-scale fitting. Finally, the thesis explored the feasibility of using multi-seasonal WorldView-3 images to map tree species using the delineated ITCs. Results indicated that: (1) the independent use of LiDAR data performed the best segmentation of canopy gaps while the synergistic use of optical and LiDAR data provided higher classification accuracy for non-forest and forest gap identification; (2) the proposed multispectral watershed segmentation and multi-scale fitting method was able to produce ITC maps of higher quality; (3) the combined use of late-spring, mid-summer, and early-spring images substantially improved the accuracy of individual tree-based species classification. The goal of this study was to develop automated methods for extracting fine-scale forest attributes for operational purposes. Although the proposed methods were mainly designed for temperate deciduous-dominated forests, they could be implemented in other types of temperate or boreal forests, such as coniferous-dominated forests.

Dear Colleagues, The composition, structure and function of forest ecosystems are the key features characterizing their ecological properties, and can thus be crucially shaped and changed by various biotic and abiotic factors on multiple spatial scales. The magnitude and extent of these changes in recent decades calls for enhanced mitigation and adaption measures. Remote sensing data and methods are the main complementary sources of up-to-date synoptic and objective information of forest ecology. Due to the inherent 3D nature of forest ecosystems, the analysis of 3D sources of remote sensing data is considered to be most appropriate for recreating the forest’s compositional, structural and functional dynamics. In this Special Issue of Forests, we published a set of state-of-the-art scientific works including experimental studies, methodological developments and model validations, all dealing with the general topic of 3D remote sensing-assisted applications in forest ecology. We showed applications in forest ecology from a broad collection of method and sensor combinations, including fusion schemes. All in all, the studies and their focuses are as broad as a forest’s ecology or the field of remote sensing and, thus, reflect the very diverse usages and directions toward which future research and practice will be directed.
