From Memory To History written by Jim Cullen and has been published by Rutgers University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-04-16 with Performing Arts categories.

Our understanding of history is often mediated by popular culture, and television series set in the past have provided some of our most indelible images of previous times. Yet such historical television programs always reveal just as much about the era in which they are produced as the era in which they are set; there are few more quintessentially late-90s shows than That ‘70s Show, for example. From Memory to History takes readers on a journey through over fifty years of historical dramas and sitcoms that were set in earlier decades of the twentieth century. Along the way, it explores how comedies like M*A*S*H and Hogan’s Heroes offered veiled commentary on the Vietnam War, how dramas ranging like Mad Men echoed current economic concerns, and how The Americans and Halt and Catch Fire used the Cold War and the rise of the internet to reflect upon the present day. Cultural critic Jim Cullen is lively, informative, and incisive, and this book will help readers look at past times, present times, and prime time in a new light.

Humorous Wit is a new compilation of quotations in their most humoristic form. There are over 15,000 of these taken from various parts of the world, with over 1,200 of them translated into English for the first time. This book features 5,000 authors from every corner of the globe, covering a period starting before classical antiquity, when man first started to record his thoughts, to modern times, enriching the cultural heritage. This does not in any way mean that the caveman was less humorous, but the richness of the environment we live in today and the variety of subject matter contribute considerably to a refined sense of humour. Moreover, considering that chimps and other primates also possess the ability to laugh, humour may have been around longer than the human race : )

Grant Templeton strolled home from his lab one night to learn that he no longer lived there. Strangers occupied his house. What he surmised must have been a simple case of absented-mindedness - losing his way while his mind pondered scientific problems - turned insidiously into terror. Either he had lost his mind or he had somehow been catapulted into an alternate universe which was similar to his but subtly different: where he either did not exist or he occupied a different place in the scheme of things. Nothing was as it should have been. He returned to his laboratory to find it abandoned. He could not locate family, friends, or co-workers by telephone. The police were unable to confirm his identity. His only ray of hope lay with a whacky sales rep who claimed that Grant had failed to appear for a business meeting with her the previous night. Then the situation got worse. People started shooting at him. A car chase along dark roads and fields ended in the middle of a barn. He and the strange sales rep escaped on foot. As the death toll mounted, law enforcement agencies descended upon the scene intent on his capture. Grant did not know where to turn. He clung to the woman who seemed to know more than she admitted, and who promised solutions to the mysteries that surrounded him. It appeared that he was the focal point of a plot to take over the world by a revitalized faction of fanatics. It all had to do with his counterpart's studies of the memory centers of the brain, and with a device that his otherworld self had invented to record those memories on a computer chip. The ultimate revelation occurred after he confronted the doppelganger who claimed to be - himself.

Life is a school. And to those dedicated to lifetime learning, class is never out. Our short time on planet earth is brimming with opportunities to become our best selves. Ian Henderson. “No one is exempt.” What’s Your Life Trying to Teach You? brings together a blend of storytelling, wit, and wisdom. This self-help guide mines a depth of experts on topics ranging from gratitude to grief and offers practical exercises and quotes from thinkers including Billy Graham and Mark Twain as well as humorists George Carlin and Robin Williams. How often have you thought you might like to chuck it all in, leave the steaming metropolis and its noise and dirt behind and make for pastures new, to begin your life again? We often talk about it but people rarely do it. Jackie Moffat is one of those who did. In 1982 she and her family - armed with a bucketload of optimism, stout boots and a highly developed sense of the ridiculous - upped sticks from London (where she'd lived all her life) and went North, to Cumbria. Their destination was the Eden Valley, and a small stock-rearing and dairy farm called Rowfoot, and there they have spent the past twenty years getting to grips with the practice of running a working farm, keeping sheep, cattle, pigs and horses, becoming part of the (often eccentric) community, coping with the ups and downs (Foot and Mouth devastated them) of farming life. For the past ten years, the author's written a regular column for the Cumbria and Lake District Life magazine, and it was this that inspired her to write about her life in rural England and the trials, tribulations and pleasures of running a farm.
