De l'histoire, on peut attendre diverses choses: un dépaysement allant jusqu'au roman, la connaissance précise et intime d'une époque, l'intelligence d'une évolution à plus ou moins long terme...Ce dernier objectif est celui vers lequel convergent les études rassemblées dans ce recueil, écrites en plusieurs occasions tout au long d'une quinzaine d'années mais progressant et faisant progresser: un certain nombre de notions fausses ont été éliminées et corrélativement un nombre sensiblement égal de données exactes retrouvées et testées.Entreprise immodeste? Cependant que le lecteur de bonne volonté prenne garde que l'on n'a pas visé ici à lui imposer un discours qui l'emprisonnerait dans un lacis de présupposés implicitement donnés comme des anxiomes indubitables. Mais les anxiomes sont-ils indubitables? Le lecteur est invité à juger sur pièces, à jauger pour son compte de la qualité des preuves et à n'avancer, de page en page, qu'après s'être assuré de la solidité des premiers résultats établis.Mais, dans cette opération, il est tenu, comme l'a été l'auteur, par le respect des contraintes de cohérence, de la référence à des critères posés en pleine lumière, de la logique des conséquences. L'opinion vague, l'irisation de la pensée par réminescence d'un déjà-lu autre part ou le rejet pour non-conformité à une tradition ou un enseignement dominant ne sont pas de mise - pas de jeu, pas de démarche scientifique. Il faut aller au delà, jusqu'à rencontrer la nécessité de ne pouvoir douter; voire, si l'on conserve une réserve, jusqu'au désir d'en avoir le coeur net, en procédant à des contrôles originaux.C'est à ce prix, incontestablement, que l'histoire peut sortir des brumes où, semble-t-il, quelques-uns aimeraient la renfermer pour régurgiter le plaisir de fabuler en paix. L'histoire économique, en particulier, toute à la fierté de s'agréger à la théorie économique mais inconsciente des fiascos de cette dernière, est quasiment toujours prête à l'épauler pour recommencer (voir les crises, voir le Tiers-Monde). Pour élémentaires qu'elles soient par les thèmes abordés, les études présentes jalonnent un itinéraire au bout duquel l'histoire économique, espère-t-on, aura regagné quelques chances de s'affirmer comme vraie.

Conventional scholarship on the Mediterranean portrays the Inner Sea as a timeless entity with unchanging ecological and agrarian features. But, Faruk Tabak argues, some of the "traditional" and "olden" characteristics that we attribute to it today are actually products of relatively recent developments. Locating the shifting fortunes of Mediterranean city-states and empires in patterns of long-term economic and ecological change, this study shows how the quintessential properties of the basin -- the trinity of cereals, tree crops, and small livestock -- were reestablished as the Mediterranean's importance in global commerce, agriculture, and politics waned. Tabak narrates this history not from the vantage point of colossal empires, but from that of the mercantile republics that played a pivotal role as empire-building city-states. His unique juxtaposition of analyses of world economic developments that flowed from the decline of these city-states and the ecological change associated with the Little Ice Age depicts large-scale, long-term social change. Integrating the story of the western and eastern Mediterranean -- from Genoa and the Habsburg empire to Venice and the Ottoman and Byzantine empires -- Tabak unveils the complex process of devolution and regeneration that brought about the eclipse of the Mediterranean.

The mid-eighteenth century witnessed what might be dubbed an economic turn that resolutely changed the trajectory of world history. The discipline of economics itself emerged amidst this turn, and it is frequently traced back to the work of François Quesnay and his school of Physiocracy. Though lionized by the subsequent historiography of economics, the theoretical postulates and policy consequences of Physiocracy were disastrous at the time, resulting in a veritable subsistence trauma in France. This galvanized relentless and diverse critiques of the doctrine not only in France but also throughout the European world that have, hitherto, been largely neglected by scholars. Though Physiocracy was an integral part of the economic turn, it was rapidly overcome, both theoretically and practically, with durable and important consequences for the history of political economy.
