Cette étude traite des interactions qui s’instaurent dans l’Atlas marocain entre les agents locaux du tourisme de montagne et sociétés locales. Elle s’appuie sur de nombreuses enquêtes de terrain conduisant à l’exploitation de divers matériaux, tels que les récits de vie, les documents d’archive, les productions du marketing touristique. Cette thèse s’inscrit dans un courant de recherche ethnographique qui aspire à discuter fait de relations plutôt que de privilégier une problématique de l’impact, de l’identité ou encore la dichotomie tradition/modernité. L’ethnographie de la pratique touristique tend ainsi à révéler les vécus autant que les conditions matérielles et institutionnelles où s’inscrivent professionnels et touristes. Le tourisme de montagne au Maroc connaît aujourd’hui un tournant de son histoire : largement organisé et exploité jusqu’ici par des organismes privés étrangers, la gérance semble en revenir petit à petit sur des acteurs locaux et sur l’Etat marocain. Cette étude analyse les tensions qui résultent de cette mutation et les enjeux qui se dessinent dans ce nouveau paysage institutionnel et professionnel. Elle aborde le rapport antinomique entre l’industrie du tourisme et les émotions vécues au cours d’un séjour touristique, qu’il s’agisse des affects des touristes et des professionnels de terrain ; les stratégies de communication commerciales, promotionnelles et professionnelles qui appellent à déconstruire les idéologies commerciales et identitaires ; la formation des guides de montagne, élément substantiel de cristallisation de ces tensions.
