This book introduces new audiences to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s final initiative, the multiracial Poor People’s Campaign (PPC) of 1968. Robert Hamilton depicts the experience of poor people who traveled to Washington in May 1968 to dramatize the issue of poverty by building a temporary city, Resurrection City. His narrative allows us to hear their voices and understand the strategies, objectives, and organization of the campaign. In addition, he highlights the campaign's educational aspect, showing that significant social movements are a means by which societies learn about themselves and framing the PPC as an initiative whose example can teach and inspire current and future generations. Producing against Poverty is an anthropological research on micro-entrepreneurs in Lima, Peru. It analyses the way micro-producers accumulate capital. The anthropological approach of the book starts with an analysis of the daily lives of the micro-producers. Its gender approach makes a comparison between the position of men and women throughout its argumentation. The author also analyses the conditions of labourers working for micro-producers. By paying extensive attention to the subcontracting links between micro-production and the large scale production process, she carefully builds up to general conclusions which go way beyond the micro level of analysis. Micro-production reproduces poverty by subordinating important participants of the production such as women and labourers. The ultimate conclusion is that the informal sector grows not only in times of economic recession, but also in times of economic growth.

"The call of the church is ptoxocracy, either as a witness and practitioner or as its ideal standard-bearer in the world." To have a meaningful stake in the lives of the poor, argues M. C. Lohrmann, would change the ways in which governance of all types--national or local municipalities, denominations, religious judicatories, and non-profit boards--determines its focus. Lohrmann defines ptoxocracy (derived from the Greek ptoxoi, the poorest of the poor) as "governance by the materially poor; a hybrid form of representative democracy whereby only persons of the lowest economic status are eligible for elected public office." This model, he contends, allows us to step back from the coupling of wealth and power created by myths of meritocracy and a rich ruling class to envision a system that works for the good of the whole. Looking to Scripture, Lohrmann follows the through-line of God's blessing of the poor in both the Hebrew and Christian canons.
