" Dans ce petit volume, qui renferme la substance de plusieurs conferences faites au College libre des sciences sociales en octobre 1897, j'ai essaye de donner non pas seulement ni precisement le resume ou la quintessence de mes trois principaux ouvrages de sociologie generale - les Lois de l'Imitation, l'Opposition universelle et la Logique sociale - mais encore et surtout le lien intime qui les unit. Cette connexion, qui a fort bien pu echapper au lecteur de ces livres, est ici mise en lumiere par des considerations d'un ordre plus general. Elles permettent, ce me semble, d'embrasser dans un meme point de vue ces trois troncons, separement publies, d'une meme pensee, ces membra disjecta d'un meme corps d'idees. Peut-etre me dira-t-on que j'aurais aussi bien fait de presenter tout d'abord en un tout systematique ce que j'ai morcele en trois publications. Mais, outre que les ouvrages en plusieurs tomes epouvantent avec quelque raison le lecteur contemporain, a quoi bon nous fatiguer a ces grandes constructions unitaires, a ces edifices complets ? Ceux qui nous suivent n'ayant rien de plus presse que de demolir ces batisses pour en utiliser les materiaux ou s'en approprier un pavillon detache, autant vaut-il leur epargner la peine de cette demolition et ne leur livrer sa pensee qu'en fragments. Toutefois a l'usage des esprits singuliers qui se plaisent a reconstruire ce qu'on leur offre a l'etat fragmentaire comme les autres a briser ce qu'on leur presente d'acheve, il n'est pas inutile peut-etre de joindre aux parties eparses de son uvre un dessin, une esquisse, indiquant le plan d'ensemble qu'on aurait aime a executer si l'on s'en etait senti la force et l'audace. C'est toute la raison d'etre de cette mince brochure. ""

This book addresses the topic of 'being bound' from a philosophical and a sociological perspective. It examines several ways in which we are bound. We are bound to acknowledge the truth and to follow laws; we are bound to others and to the world. Who we are is partly defined by those bonds, regardless of whether we live up to them – or even of whether we acknowledge them. Puzzling questions arise from the fact that we are bound, such as: How are those bonds binding? Wherein lies their normative character? A venerable philosophical tradition, particularly since Kant, has provided an account of normativity that crucially appeals to such notions as “self-legislation.” But can our normative bonds be properly understood in these essentially first-personal terms? Many argue that our social condition resists any account of those bonds that fails to acknowledge the perspectives of the second and the third person. The first part of the book explores these themes from a historical perspective in the tradition of transcendental philosophy (Kant, Fichte, Hegel, Husserl and Heidegger); it examines the phenomenon of “being bound”, i.e., why and how we are bound. The second part of the book offers a sociological analysis of social bonds that is both historical and systematic. Based on sociological approaches to “solidarity” and “reflexivity”, it explores the way in which the phenomenon of “being bound” manifests through the concept of a “social relation”.
