Depuis ces dernières années, la prévalence de l'obésité ne cesse de croître dans tous les pays industrialisés et la France n'en demeure pas moins épargnée avec aujourd'hui plus de 15% des enfants français en surpoids dont 2 à 4% d'enfants obèses. L'ampleur de l'épidémie ainsi que les complications de l'obésité sur l'enfant et sur l'adulte qu'il deviendra, obligent à considérer ce phénomène comme une préoccupation majeure de Santé Publique. l'établissement d'une définition de l'obésité chez l'enfant, s'appuyant sur des courbes de centiles de l'Indice de Masse Corporelle (IMC), établies à partir de données de différents pays, a permis de mieux cerner l'ampleur de ce phénomène et de mener des démarches de dépistage et de prévention de l'obésité. L'obésité est associée à une accumulation de facteurs de risques : diminution de l'activité physique, modification des apports alimentaires, sédentarité excessive, expression d'une susceptibilité génétique. cela entraîne chez l'enfant des complications à court, moyen et long terme dont la complication principale est sa persistance à l'âge adulte. Il est donc nécessaire de mettre en place une prise en charge chez l'enfant et chez l'adolescent d'autant qu'aucun médicament destiné à traiter l'obésité chez l'enfant n'a pour l'instant d'Autorisation de Mise sur le Marché en France. La prévention quant à el e est primordiale et nécessite une mobilisation de multiples intervenants; c'est ce qui est réalisé au travers de projets comme Fleurbaix - Laventie ville santé, EPODE, et d'associations telles que APOP, RéPOP et PREVART. Cela permettrait de réduire efficacement l'incidence de l'obésité chez l'enfant et l'adolescent et plus tard aussi, à l'âge adulte.

L'obésité infantile est un vrai problème de santé publique non seulement par son évolution inquiétante depuis plusieurs années mais aussi par les complications qu'elle engendre sur la santé physique et psychologique de l'enfant. Il est donc primordial de la prévenir et de la prendre en charge de façon optimale pour limiter les conséquences à l'âge adulte mais principalement aussi pour améliorer la qualité de vie de l'enfant. Cependant, pour que celle-ci soit véritablement efficace, il faut intégrer l'enfant au maximum dans son parcours de soins pour qu'il puisse par la suite, se prendre en charge et être autonome. Ainsi, les outils utilisés en consultations se doivent d'être adaptés à son âge. Les praticiens du service de pédiatrie du CHU de Nantes ont constaté que les moyens qu'ils avaient à disposition pour la prise en charge des enfants obèses étaient justement trop peu nombreux et surtout non adaptés à leur jeune âge. A donc été créé en collaboration avec ces praticiens, un livret destiné à l'enfant qui permet l'apport de notions pédagogiques ainsi qu'un suivi attentif, tout en restant un document ludique. Autant d'éléments qui promettent au livret un succès, que ce soit auprès de l'enfant qui va recevoir des soins efficaces tout en s'amusant, ou auprès des professionnels de santé qui vont voir leur pratique facilitée. Et c'est tout l'enjeu de ce projet, qui je l'espère va tenir ses promesses.

In today's world, everyone carries a toxic load of dozens of industrially produced chemicals in their bloodstream. Not only do these adversely affect the health of adults and children, but also, and more worryingly, they damage the development of unborn infants. The amniotic fluid of pregnant women has been found to contain a variety of chemicals, such as pesticides, plasticizers, disinfectant products, flame-retardants, surfactants and UV filters, many of which interfere with fetal physiology, especially thyroid hormone action. Thyroid hormone is vital for brain development, particularly for the fetus during pregnancy and for toddlers. In fact, children born to women who lack this thyroid hormone (or who are unwittingly exposed to thyroid-disrupting chemicals) have lower IQs and more neurodevelopmental problems. Evolution of the human brain has involved multiple changes and processes dependent on thyroid hormone. The urgent question thus arises: Is chemical pollution poisoning brain development and reversing evolution's most outstanding achievement: the human brain? And if so, as this book convincingly illuminates, what can be done about it both collectively and individually? Toxic Cocktail provides a clear view of how many environmental chemicals interfere with brain development.
