Excerpt from Practical Agricultural Chemistry This book is intended as a practical handbook in Agricultural Chemistry for Students working through courses of instruction for the London B.Sc. degree in Agriculture and other examinations of similar type and standard. In order to avoid the baldness that cannot be dissociated from a mere list of practical experiments, a short theoretical discussion has been given where necessary before each series of operations, in order to recall to the mind of the student the more salient points in connection with the practical work he has in hand. Emphasis has been placed on the qualitative side of the subject to a greater extent than is frequently done. It is a matter of extreme regret that many of the students who leave our Agricultural Colleges do so with very little appreciation of the practical value of chemistry to agriculture, and with no more than a theoretical insight into the mechanism and meaning of the countless changes with which they are destined continually to come in contact during their agricultural career. This is often due to their having spent most of their time in the chemical laboratory in working through analytical processes, the intricacies of which have had little meaning for them. Excerpt from A Course of Practical Chemistry for Agricultural Students, Vol. 1 The following exercises in Practical Agricultural Chemistry are designed primarily for the use of students taking the course for the Degree in Agricultural Science at Cambridge University. Volume I is intended to cover the first year's course on the Chemistry and Physics of the Soil, while Volume II covers the second year's course on the Chemistry of Foods. The latter volume is divided into two parts: Part I dealing with such exercises in Pure Organic Chemistry as are essential for agricultural students, and is entirely qualitative, while Part II deals with quantitative estimations and technical analyses of food stuffs. This division has been considered desirable, as students who have already taken a course in Organic Chemistry will find it unnecessary to work through Part I of Volume II. Volume III deals with the special advanced Chemistry of Insecticides and Fungicides, Food preservatives, etc. It is hoped that this division into convenient booklets will make them useful to teachers. The exercises are designed to illustrate most of the essential points in Agricultural Chemistry and to require the minimum of apparatus. A Course of Practical Work was compiled by Professor T. B. Wood some years ago for the use of his classes, and this forms the foundation of a portion of the present exercises. The Sincere thanks of the authors are due to Professor Wood and the Syndics of the University Press for their permission to utilise that material. Excerpt from Popular Treatise on Agricultural Chemistry: Intended for Use the Practical Farmer The reasons which have induced me to publish the following treatise are, a desire to supply a want extensively present amongst Agriculturists, for such general knowledge connected with chemistry as may assist them in their various operations, and also the belief that no work of the kind at present exists, in which the subject chosen is either so fully explained or so well adapted for general perusal. Until a very recent period, great doubt has existed amongst all writers on Agricultural Chemistry, as to the manner in which plants assimilate the matter composing their structure, not to mention the source from which these matters are derived. In the following pages I have endeavoured to explain these hitherto mysterious operations of nature, in such a way as to be of easy comprehension to all who will take the trouble to investigate the subject. Excerpt from The Progressive Farmer: A Scientific Treatise on Agricultural Chemistry, the Geology of Agriculture; On Plant, Animals, Manure, and Soils, Applied to Practical Agriculture Also, calcium, an element, will combine with the ele ment, oxygen, precisely 20 lbs. Of the first to 8 lbs. Of the last, and form 28 lbs. Of quick-lime. Now, if we take these two compounds, water and quick-lime, 9 lbs. Of the former will combine with 28 lbs. Of the latter, and form 37 lbs. Of slacked lime. It is true, you might put more than 9 lbs. Of water to 28 lbs. Of lime, but the excess would soon evaporate, leaving precisely 9 lbs. Combined with the. Lime in the form of a dry, white powder, (water-slacked lime). If you were to put less than 9 lbs. Of water to 28 of lime, then only a part of the lime would be slacked; and in order to slack the whole, you would have to continue putting on water till you had reached the 91bs., when the whole would be reduced to a dry, white powder. It is so with all chemical combinations they are always in definite, fixed and unalterable proportions. In this respect they differ from mere mixtures, which may be in any proportions. Excerpt from The Chemistry of Farm Practice Life, food, and raiment are directly or indirectly de pendent upon agricultural products. In the settlement of our country, land was abundant and people were few, con sequently little thought was given to the needs of the increasing numbers of succeeding generations. As the land first cultivated lost its fertility, the tide of population turned westward where unlimited areas of virgin soil awaited the herds and plowshares of the settlers. But this fresh area has been occupied, and to maintain the fertility of; those fields that are still productive and to restore those that have become exhausted is the problem now facing agriculture. The maintenance of the fertility of a productive soil demands the intelligent application of the principles of agricultural chemistry. The restoration of wornout fields is a difficult and costly undertaking. The successful farmer must reinforce his art by the application of the fundamental information derived from the study of chemistry, geology, botany, bacteriology, and entomology. Chemistry aids agriculture in many ways. By means of it, exact data are collected and the fundamental reasons for practical results are explained. Then, too, chemistry invents new or improves old methods of fertilization. The chemist analyzes soils, manures and vegetable products. The value of soil analysis to the practical farmer, perhaps formerly overrated, in more recent years has been under rated. From a soil analysis the farmer can at least learn if his soil is unusually deficient in any important element. Chemistry also protects the agriculturist from the impositions of the unscrupulous fertilizer manufacturer.
