The ability to perform a wide variety of practical procedures safely and competently is essential for any doctor involved in the practice of anaesthesia and intensive care. Junior doctors especially are now called upon to gain competence in many invasive practical procedures in an increasingly short space of time, whilst also understanding the theory behind them. This highly practical book is the only guide needed to the procedures and techniques commonly used in anaesthesia and critical care medicine. Step-by-step, it clearly explains each technique and procedure, enabling the reader to fully understand how and why they are performed. Full colour photographs illustrate each technique, and every chapter covers the same essential information: definition, indications, contraindications, complications, equipment, sites, and technique, for ease of use. This book will be used by all junior trainees in anaesthesia, along with junior doctors from other specialities working in intensive care units. It will also be useful to any senior anaesthetist who wishes to update or refresh their knowledge, as well as anyone working in the emergency ward who performs any of these procedures.

The Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) is a highly reliable and valid tool for the evaluation of trainees in anaesthesia. It enables examiners and trainers to assess a number of competencies in an organised way. Performance in the OSCE is considered to be a fair reflection of the level of knowledge and skill attained during anaesthesia training. Apart from having a wide and deep knowledge on the subject, trainees are expected to have the capacity to demonstrate their competency in a short period of time allotted for each station. The authors of this book have a rich experience in successfully conducting OSCE courses in the United Kingdom. The sample OSCE sets in the book closely simulate the style and content of the Royal College of Anaesthetists' examination format. The book contains 100 OSCE stations with answers based on key practical procedures, clinical skills, communication skills, data interpretation, anaesthetic equipment and the management of critical incidents on a simulator. This book will also help candidates all over the world to pass highly competitive postgraduate examinations in anaesthesia. It is an invaluable educational resource for all anaesthetists.

There is a large influx of trauma, general surgical, pediatric, neurosurgical and obstetric emergencies as the hospital is one of the major public hospitals located in a densely populated region sitting amidst major routes in the city. It also provides services for emergency cardiovascular, cerebrovascular interventions and cadaver transplants. Daily lessons from this tremendous emergency work inspired us to bring out this book. There is plethora of reference material available in basic sciences related to anesthesiology, namely physiology, pharmacology, physics and anatomy. Similarly, a large number of textbooks are on techniques such as general, regional, monitored anesthesia care as well as super specialties like cardiac, neurosurgical and pediatric anesthesia, etc. But there is a limited availability of books and references for emergency anesthesia. One has to scan and integrate parts from various sources. This book is an attempt to assimilate the scattered information and add clinical expertise. Contents of this book have been divided into nine sections to cover majority of the emergencies. General considerations for adults, obstetric and pediatric sections have been written separately to avoid duplication. An additional challenge is cases with various medical disorders for emergency surgeries. Efforts have been taken to accommodate them in first section and obstetric section. The contributors of this book work together at LTMMC and LTMGH and have a well-balanced team with fresh talent bringing the latest technological knowledge and tenured practitioners supplementing it with applied experience. Part of the team worked on collection of the matter from different sources for an ideal scenario, while the senior faculty members used their vast clinical experience for a more practical and realistic application. These combined efforts have been truly beneficial to achieve our goal to rationally mix latest technology with clinical experience and identify potential ways to conduct anesthesia with best results, at least costs and minimum risk.

The efforts of anaesthesiologists, pharmaceutical companies, and the development of the internet has lead to a situation that now almost every anaesthesiologist can be in close contact to anaesthetic pharmacology computer simulation pro grams and target controlled infusion devices. These two tools allow us to in crease our understanding and improve the controllability of anaesthetic drug administration, on site, in the operating theatre. In Europe the growing enthusi asm regarding the study and practice of intravenous anaesthesia has lead to an increased output of manuscripts on this subject, the initiation of workshops on the pharmacology of anaesthetic agents and the formation of a society that embodies this spirit; the European Society for Intravenous Anaesthesia, the EuroSIVA. EuroSIVA The concept of EuroSIVA has been to provide a forum to co-ordinate, facilitate and promote high quality presentations in the area of intravenous drug admini stration. The first two meetings held in 1988 in Barcelona and 1999 in Amster dam achieved these aims. During the Barcelona and Amsterdam meetings pre senters of over 10 countries shared their knowledge with 250 and 400 partici pants, respectively. In addition to the EuroSIVA meetings the international board aims to promote education for those involved with intravenous anaes thesia.
