Taking a heuristic approach to relativistic quantum mechanics, Practical Quantum Electrodynamics provides a complete introduction to the theory, methodologies, and calculations used for explaining the physical interaction of charged particles. This book combines the principles of relativity and quantum theory necessary for performing the calculations of the electromagnetic scattering of electrons and positrons and the emission and absorption of photons. Beginning with an introduction of the wave equations for spin-0 and spin-1/2 particles, the author compares and contrasts the relativistic and spin effects for both types of particles. He emphasizes how the relativistic treatment of quantum mechanics and the spin-1/2 degree of freedom are necessary to describe electromagnetic interactions involving electron scattering and points out the shortfalls of the wave-equation approach to relativistic quantum mechanics. Developing the Feynman rules for quantum electrodynamics by example, the book offers an intuitive, hands-on approach for performing fundamental calculations. It also illustrates how to perform calculations that can be related to experiments such as diagrams, lifetimes, and cross sections. Practical Quantum Electrodynamics builds a strong foundation for further studies and research in theoretical and particle physics, particularly relativistic quantum field theory or nonrelativistic many-body theory.

Kallen's Quantenelektrodynamik provides a concise treatment of the subject. Its strong points are the careful attention to ex planatory detail, the methodical coverage of all the maj or results and the straightforward, lucid style. Certainly it will be a val uable reference for one learning the subject or for one who re quires the details of the practical results. Of course modern quantum field theory has now grown far beyond its dramatic be ginnings in electrodynamics and we have therefore included some references to introduce the reader to the more recent and more specialized literature. We have corrected some minor errors: we would appreciate it if readers would inform us of any others which they find. We thank Professors Paul Urban and C. MtSller for permission to use the biographical material on Kallen. We also wish to thank Springer-Verlag for undertaking publication of this edition by an unorthodox method, but one which will reduce the cost to the reader. In particular, we are grateful to Dr. H. Mayer-Kaupp and Mr. Herb Stillman for their kind cooperation. Finally, we thank Mr. Michael Teague for reading and commenting on the first dozen sections and we thank Mrs. Joanne Downs for ed iting and typing the final manuscript. May 1972 C. K. Iddings M. This advanced textbook covers many fundamental, traditional and new branches of electrodynamics, as well as the related fields of special relativity, quantum mechanics and quantum electrodynamics. The book introduces the material at different levels, oriented towards 3rd-4th year bachelor, master, and PhD students. This is so as to describe the whole complexity of physical phenomena, instead of a mosaic of disconnected data. The required mathematical background is collated in Chapter 1, while the necessary physical background is included in the main text of the corresponding chapters and also given in appendices. The content is based on teaching material tested on students over many years, and their training to apply general theory for solving scientific and engineering problems. To this aim, the book contains approximately 800 examples and problems, many of which are described in detail. Some of these problems are designed for students to work on their own with only the answers and descriptions of results, and may be solved selectively. The examples are key ingredients to the theoretical course; the user should study all of them while reading the corresponding chapters. Equally suitable as a reference for researchers specialized in science and engineering.

This book continues the fundamental work of Arnold Sommerfeld and David Hestenes formulating theoretical physics in terms of Minkowski space-time geometry. We see how the standard matrix version of the Dirac equation can be reformulated in terms of a real space-time algebra, thus revealing a geometric meaning for the “number i” in quantum mechanics. Next, it is examined in some detail how electroweak theory can be integrated into the Dirac theory and this way interpreted in terms of space-time geometry. Finally, some implications for quantum electrodynamics are considered. The presentation of real quantum electromagnetism is expressed in an addendum. The book covers both the use of the complex and the real languages and allows the reader acquainted with the first language to make a step by step translation to the second one.

This book introduces quantum field theory models from a classical point of view. Practical applications are discussed, along with recent progress for quantum computations and quantum simulations experiments. New developments concerning discrete aspects of continuous symmetries and topological solutions in tensorial formulations of gauge theories are also reported. Quantum Field Theory: A Quantum Computation Approach requires no prior knowledge beyond undergraduate quantum mechanics and classical electrodynamics. With exercises involving Mathematica and Python with solutions provided, the book is an ideal guide for graduate students and researchers in high-energy, condensed matter and atomic physics.

This book is intended for physicists and chemists who need to understand the theory of atomic and molecular structure and processes, and who wish to apply the theory to practical problems. As far as practicable, the book provides a self-contained account of the theory of relativistic atomic and molecular structure, based on the accepted formalism of bound-state Quantum Electrodynamics. The author was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of London in 1992.

This title gives students a good understanding of how quantum mechanics describes the material world. The text stresses the continuity between the quantum world and the classical world, which is merely an approximation to the quantum world.

Whereas then' has been significant progress in various branches of elementary particle physics during the last decade or so, Quantum Electrodynamics seems to be in a somewhat stagnating phase. For people not involved in sophisticated questions of relativistic field theories the situation might appear as not very di(:ltinct from the time, when Schwinger, Feynman and Dyson publishl'ld their famous articles in the early 1950's. Only some arguments against the possibility of a finite Quantum Electrodynamics (1953) has caused a significant reaction and initiated a rather vehement discussion. In connection with these questions about the consistency of Quantum Electrodynamics there arises the problem of the high energy behaviour of the theory, since higher and higher energies will be available in future experiments. For these reasons I thought it quite useful to choose Quantum Electrodynamics at high energies as subject of this year's meetings and hope to meet the demands of both experimental and theoretical physi cists working in this field. Graz, October, 1965.

Problems of quantum field theory with unstable vacuum are considered. In the case of quantum electrodynamics, the vacuum unstability is connected with the possibility of pair creating by external electromagnetic fields already in zeroth order with respect to the radiation interaction. The perturbation theory is constructed, for which the interaction with the external field is kept exact. Exact Green functions are introduced and the functional formulation is discussed. Perturbation theory for calculating the mean values of the Heisenberg operators and the total probabilities of radiating processes is built in the case under consideration. All results referring to the relations of the optical theorem for the external fields with unstable vacuum are presented. All these particularities are demonstrated for concrete external fields. Problems of the quantum electrodynamics at finite temperature are considered.
