Don't let scales hold you back any longer! Scales are the foundation of music and must be learned by everyone. However, most musicians struggle learning their scales and placing well in region, all-state, and ensemble auditions. But it's not your fault! Most scale books are hard to use, confusing, overwhelming, and not user friendly. Current resources fail musicians in the following ways: Specific scales are difficult to find. By the time you find what you need to learn, you're already frustrated, which leads to a bad start of practicing. Everything is crammed. There is too much information in too little space leading to excessive straining of the visual system which results in poor focus and concentration. No guides or explanations. Modern books give you what to learn, but no effort or help in how to learn the material. Do not teach how to practice your scales effectively and efficiently. No visual highlight or advice on which sections to work on. No space for notes or alternative fingering. Your scales end up looking like a mess and are hard to read. Most books give way too much material that is not necessary, thus overwhelming the musician. As a lifelong musician and educator, I struggled with the same issues. I hated learning and practicing scales, and often did not get the scores or placements I wanted due to poor scales. As a teacher, I made it my mission to create resources that empower the musician to succeed. I created this scale books FOR musicians. The scales are organized from lowest number of accidentals to highest, so they are easy to find. Plus the table of contents provides specific pages for the scales you need. One page has everything you need for any particular key! The reader is presented with 2 and 3 octave scales arpeggios, and an octave scale in 2 octave range, all on one page. Each page highlights the most difficult spots, focusing your attention on what you should spend your time on, and offers advice on how to improve that particular section. There is ample room to write in notes, advice, alternate fingering or any visual aids to help you learn. Beginning of the book shows step by step, what effective and efficient practice should look like, and most importantly explains why. Through understanding what makes scales challenging, you can work on those challenges in a guided fashion, improving your technique. By using this book, you will improve your playing because learning scales will no longer be frustrating and confusing. Patterns are explained and shown, thus making it easy to learn what you need for auditions, competitions, and ensemble placement. Rarely do scales and arpeggios occur in music the way we learn them in books, that is, until now in this book. When we encounter a scale or an arpeggio in a piece of music, we should be prepared to first notice that it is a scale or arpeggio, or part thereof, and consider it on its own terms. Does a particular routined fingering work here? How can we efficiently negotiate its twists and turns? I promise you the scale in your piece will not proceed innocently from G to shining G with a prescribed fingering and no detours. At least, not very often. But, really I hear you ask, are scales and arpeggios a necessary part of our pianistic diet? Well, yes and no. We need to understand the topography of the keyboard and elementary keyboard harmony in order to navigate the keyboard's shoals and depths. Since we propel our hands laterally up and down the keyboard by means of certain navigational tools, of which the thumb is one, how when and where to activate the thumb has always been and remains a primary issue. So a clear feel for the relationships of white to black keys and the appropriate digits for depressing them is essential. Learn the patterns. But do we really need to drill these learned patterns on a daily basis as, for example, in a technical exercise? Once learned and worked-in to the point of being automatic, it is no longer necessary or even desirable to repeat them in their root positions for the purpose of gaining finger "strength" or "agility" or "independence." Don't buy this book unless you are a teacher, or your teacher told you to buy it!This edition has no fingerings. If you are teaching yourself the cello (first, please consider getting a teacher. It is very helpful!), this is not the right book for you. My other scale book called "Probably the Only Cello Scale Book You Will Ever Need" is the better choice. It has fingerings for all the scales.This book contains all 24 major and melodic minor scales AND arpeggios. Each scale and arpeggio is shown in 1, 2, and 3 octave forms. It is very hard to find books that have one, two, and three octaves scales shown separately! Also includes some suggested bowing patterns, which are shown at the bottom of the page. Many books are in circle of fifths order, which is less practical. When students are working on F major, an easy scale, you must hunt for it way in the back. This book is organized more relevent to the order in which the scales will be learned. The order (major scales) is C, G, F, D, Bb, etc. Each page has all of the scales and arpeggios for that key. This can start conversations about future playing: here's where you will be someday! By having the arpeggios on the same page as the scales, you can easily see the structure of chords as they relate to scalesStudents can get confused if they are learning a one octave scale while seeing a two octave scale on the page. It is often hard for them to stop in the middle and pick it back up near the end. This book is meant to be easy to read and follow. The scales are not obscured with bowings or theory notations. The goal is simplicity, clarity, and completeness.
