As the chapters of contemporary architecture in Lebanon remain unwritten, the last chapter of Part One analyzes the directions that frantic reconstruction has taken after the war of 1975-1990 in comparison with the earlier period, and constructs the framework for future examinations. In Part Two, a database of architects/engineers and buildings tries to make manifest the richness and variety of the architecture produced. It is based mainly on primary sources, data on buildings, drawings, interviews with architects and/or their collaborators, supplemented by secondary sources. By bringing to light the relatively recent past, this dissertation would construe a better understanding of modern architectural heritage. It is hoped that questioning certain contemporary meanings and misapprehensions concerning tradition, modernity, and identity, will contribute to the knowledge of recent history in a country that constantly looks to ancient times for new beginnings, often identifying heritage with the self and modernity with others.

Developed in collaboration with a co-mapper in Beirut, this thesis also adds to the conversation around international research in the age of COVID-19. The findings indicate that changed views on modern architecture are surfacing during the reconstruction efforts. These changes represent an initial apogee of an effort twenty years in the making to increase the knowledge of the modern heritage in the city. They are mirrored in current efforts to safeguard, document and revalorize the modern heritage in the city, both on an institutional and a popular level, thus representing the beginning of a wider shift in the view on architectural heritage in the city.

Using Kuwait as a case study and Pan Arab Modernism as a lens, this book comes to fill two voids in the literature on Middle Eastern architecture: one is in practice and the other is in history. The current practice of architecture in Kuwait, the Gulf and the larger Middle East, is typically a-contextual and lacking any understanding of the local context. The architectural history, on the other hand, ignores the larger context of the Middle East and the influence of Pan Arabism is not configured into many analyses. Thus, this project seeks to tackle both. By providing a [re]contextualizing of the architectural history of Kuwait and bringing forgotten protagonists back into the dialogue, a nuanced reading of Pan Arab Modern architecture emerges. After working briefly as a freelance planner, Ms. Kosremelli opened her own architecture office in Beirut in 1981 and a branch office in the United Arab Emirates in 1990. She is also a part-time faculty member of the American University of Beirut. Ms. Kosremelli's clients are people who respect their traditions and their environment. Prior to the Lebanese Civil War, Beirut boasted a vibrant art scene. The war took its toll on the city’s infrastructure, leading to the relocation and shutdown of the existing galleries and art institutions. Since the war, art in Beirut is being revived along different tracks, in tandem with its complex geopolitical identity. My thesis argues that artists, gallerists, and architects collaboratively assert a specific message and image of Lebanon, by creating a nostalgia appealing to certain moments in Beirut’s past (or the prospective future). I track the architecture of the different art galleries and institutions and supplement it with the kind of art they exhibit, to create preliminary categories, each vying for its own identity of Lebanon. In the thesis, I choose the modernist architecture category as the emblematic postcard image of prewar Beirut, featuring the modernist architecture that endured the war and came to represent Beirut’s cultural Renaissance. I chose to focus primarily on the following three representative examples of modernist art spaces in Ras Beirut: Galerie Janine Rubeiz, Saleh Barakat Gallery, and Dar El Nimer. The self-funded art spaces are located in Ras Beirut, an area ingrained in the Lebanese national memory as the site of mutual coexistence between Christians and Muslims. I contextualize the physical qualities of each gallery within the concurrent local and regional sociopolitical conditions to examine the role they may be playing or the political agenda they may be pushing. I analyze the image projected by the institution through the archival material, texts, catalogues, interviews with the directors of the spaces, the curators, and the architects who renovated/designed them, as well as their general reception by the public through newspaper clippings and occasional art reviews. With their focus on Lebanese and Arab artists, a sentimentality towards the area’s history, and a disdain with the city’s postwar development, these galleries mobilize modernist buildings to resurrect the cosmopolitan Beirut, the modernist cultural hub of the Arab left intellectuals in the 1960’s and early 1970’s.
