This book highlights the growing divide in nineteenth-century intellectual circles between amateur and professional interest, and explores the institutional means whereby professional ascendancy was achieved in the broad field of studies of the past. It is concerned with how antiquarian 'gentlemen of leisure', pursuing their interests through local archaeological societies, were, by the end of the century, relegated to the sidelines of the now university-based discipline of history. At the same time it explores the theological as well as technical barriers which arrested the development of archaeology in this period. This is a notable contribution to the intellectual history of Victorian England, attending not simply to the ideas perpetrated by these communities of scholarship but to their social status, relating such social consideration to a more traditional intellectual history to create a new social history of ideas.

But there was a time, before the successful application of photography to the heavens, in which scientists had to rely on handmade drawings of these mysterious phenomena. What is the relationship between culture and mental health? Is mental illness universal? Are symptoms of mental disorders different across social groups? In the late 1960s these questions gave rise to a groundbreaking series of articles written by the psychiatrist Henri Ellenberger, who would go on to publish The Discovery of the Unconscious: The History and Evolution of Dynamic Psychiatry in 1970. Fifty years later they are presented for the first time in English translation, introduced by historian of science Emmanuel Delille. Ethnopsychiatry explores one of the most controversial subjects in psychiatric research: the role of culture in mental health. In his articles Ellenberger addressed the complex clinical and theoretical problems of cultural specificity in mental illness, collective psychoses, differentiations within cultural groups, and biocultural interactions. He was especially attuned to the correlations between rapid cultural transformations in postwar society, urbanization, and the frequency of mental illness. Ellenberger drew from a vast and varied primary and secondary literature in several languages, as well as from his own findings in clinical practice, which included work with indigenous peoples. In analyzing Ellenberger's contributions Delille unveils the transnational and interdisciplinary origins of transcultural psychiatry, which grew out of knowledge networks that crisscrossed the globe. Historian Amos Morris-Reich here tracks the trajectory of racial photography from 1876 through the Weimar and Nazi periods in Germany and, briefly, after WWII. With a particular focus on German and Jewish contexts, "Race and Photography "reveals the important role of racial photography within academic discourse on race. Photography was not simply a medium of illustration but rather it was a conduit for new forms of visual perception. Approaching the history of racial photography from an epistemic point of view raises questions concerning the similarity and specific difference of photography compared with other scientific media, and makes explicit the scientific and cultural assumptions in which different uses of photography were embedded. Paying particular attention to the effect of photography on concepts of visual perception and also to the intricate relationship between racial photography and the imagination, Morris-Reich examines numerous scientists and scholars, both prominent and obscure, who developed photographic methods for the study of race or made methodical use of photography for its study. His careful reconstruction of individual cases, conceptual genealogies, and emergent patterns points to transformations in the scientific status of photography throughout the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and uncovers the agency of photographic media in the history of scientific racism.
