Questo volume raccoglie i contributi di analisi che sono a base della individuazione delle città italiane nelle quali è stata effettuata la ricerca su La distanza sociale. Le città analizzate sono, da Nord a Sud, Milano, Genova, Roma, Napoli, Bari, Reggio Calabria, Messina e Palermo, scelte in quanto tipiche di processi italiani differenziati. Le analisi condotte evidenziano una fortissima continuità storica che è a base di molte delle realtà urbane e metropolitane italiane della contemporaneità; in particolare viene provato che il disegno urbanistico è strettamente legato al disegno sociale, e alla topografia urbana corrisponde in modo netto una leggibilissima topografia sociale. In questo senso le analisi effettuate rendono ragione delle distanze sociali oggettivamente vissute e sono spesso predittori non secondari delle distanze sociali soggettivamente percepite.

Questo volume fa parte di un piano editoriale che presenta i risultati di uno studio condotto in sette aree urbane italiane sul tema della distanza sociale. In particolare, viene qui presentata l'attività del laboratorio metodologico che, partendo dall'analisi della letteratura e dall'impianto concettuale sviluppato nella prima fase dell'indagine, ha lavorato alla costruzione e all'implementazione degli strumenti utili alla rilevazione delle tre dimensioni della distanza sociale soggettiva identificate: la distanza sociale percepita, quella agita e quella subita, costruendo e testando strumenti ex novo e riformulando alcuni degli strumenti esistenti in modo da adeguarli al contesto italiano contemporaneo. I risultati del lavoro svolto vengono presentati seguendo un percorso che parte dallo studio del più generale problema metodologico della rilevazione degli atteggiamenti nella ricerca sociale alla disamina teorico-metodologica del concetto preso in esame. Si passa poi alla descrizione e all'analisi del processo di costruzione degli strumenti di rilevazione e della fase di testing e, infine, all'illustrazione dei principali risultati ottenuti dal loro utilizzo in un'indagine campionaria svolta nelle sette aree urbane implicate nella ricerca.

Public management research has in recent years paid increasing attention to the third sector, especially to its role in the provision of public services. Evidence of this is the rising number of publications on the topic, as well as a growing number of sessions and papers on the topic in academic conferences of the EGPA and IRSPM. However, much of the discussion on its role is motivated at least as much by ideology as by fact. We still lack a proper empirical understanding of what happens when the third sector is drawn into public service provision. In this thematic presentation of Co-Production: The Third Sector and the Delivery of Public Services, we will try to enhance this understanding by presenting several new studies on the subject. We also introduce the concepts of co-production, co-management and co-governance as a conceptual framework that enables us to better understand such developments.
