नई कहानी को समृद्ध बनाने में जिन कथा-लेखिकाओं ने महत्त्वपूर्ण कार्य किया है, मन्नू भंडारी का नाम उनमें सर्वोपरि है। स्वभावतः इसमें उनका नारी-मन रूपायित हुआ है। आधुनिक नारी की अस्मिता, उसकी अपनी पहचान और सामाजिक जड़ताओं से लड़ने के उसके साहस की उन्होंने बराबर रचनात्मक हिमायत की है। यह एक चुनौती-भरा कार्य था, क्योंकि उनके अपने शब्दों में, ‘कवयित्री की अपेक्षा नारी-कथाकार के साथ यह कठिनाई और भी बढ़ जाती है कि उसे बिना लाक्षणिक भाषा का सहारा लिये अधिक खुलकर सामने आना पड़ता है। वह घिसे-पिटे कथानकों और भाव-धरातलों को ही लेती रहे, तब तक तो ठीक है, लेकिन जहाँ जीवन और जगत के व्यापक क्षेत्रों को छूने का साहस उसने किया कि प्रत्यक्ष और परोक्ष वर्जनाएँ उसकी ओर अँगुली उठाती सामने आ खड़ी होती हैं।’ मन्नू भंडारी की ये कहानियाँ कहानी-कला के अपने तकाजों और चुनौतियों से बेबाक भाषा में जूझती हुई सामाजिक सरोकार की भी कहानियाँ हैं और आज के अर्धसामन्ती-अर्धपूँजीवादी समाज में नारी के उभरते व्यक्तित्व, सम्बन्धों के बदलते स्वरूप और उसके संघर्षों को रेखांकित करती हैं। फिर भी मन्नू भंडारी सिर्फ ‘नारी लेखिका’ ही नहीं हैं। उन्होंने विविध अनुभव-खंडों को जागरूकता के साथ कहानियों में उठाया है।
