The world, as we know it, has drastically changed since mid-March 2020 when the coronavirus was declared a public health emergency and was spreading around the world. Like so many schools, businesses, and sports associations, millions of churches and houses of worship were temporarily closed to prevent the spread of the virus. What was the church to do? They were used to gathering in person, with faces and feet; however, with the present climate and to protect human life, the church moved to a virtual setting. The well-respected leadership of this church took the seriousness of the pandemic from the very beginning, and as of March 17, they were forced to close and shut the doors. “The church doors may be closed, but the church is still open,” stated the pastor as he started the Glad Tidings International Church of God in Christ Zoom prayer line. As online attendance grew by leaps and bounds, the saints began calling it a lifeline—because of the lives that were being sustained during the pandemic in prayer. Power, Passion, and Prayers during the Pandemic reveals what a local church did to survive the first year of this global crisis. The auspicious leaders, Bishop J.W. Macklin and Lady Vanessa Macklin, declared confidently that “we still believe God,” which became the theme of GTI as everyone endeavored to cope with the uncertainty and anxiety of the pandemic. Praying daily gave us the strength we needed to trust that God is with us at every moment and is beside us every step of the way. The author was inspired to write this book based on the faithfulness, commitment, and testimonies of those who were fighting to replace their pain with prayer and power. She witnessed God’s people take the church out into the community, feed the hungry, love the unchurched, offer health services, and make disciples as the church continued to advance the Kingdom of God. COVID-19 didn’t stop them, not at all. The members of Glad Tidings International and other believers around the world experienced some gain and some losses, but they kept on going. The pandemic empowered them, impassioned them, and encouraged both the young and old to forge ahead for Christ. “The church may have been shut down, but we will not shut up.”

In the months immediately before the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, I was spending every Saturday morning volunteering at the local hospital as a spiritual care volunteer. I checked in on patients and, if they so desired, prayed with them. Praying with others, praying for others, was one of the most spiritually fulfilling things I had ever done. It was both humbling and uplifting and it felt like I was finally responding to the call God had placed in my heart. And then the pandemic hit, and the hospital asked the volunteers to stay at home. And yet, I still felt called to pray. So I started writing prayers every morning, early when it was still dark. I wrote the prayers for me, initially. I wrote the words that I needed to hear that day. And then I posted them online, figuring that others might need to hear those same words. I did this for fifty days in a row. This book is a compilation of those prayers. I've entitled the book A New Morning: Prayers in the Pandemic, but they are not specific to this one moment in history. Think of pandemic as a metaphor. Think of pandemic as the seasons of doubt and fear that plague all of us at one time or another in our lives. These are prayers for those moments, when we most need God, when we need to be reminded that we are loved in ways we cannot even begin to imagine. These are prayers of hope. They are prayers of promise. Weeping may last for the night, but joy comes in the morning. Let this be a new morning for all of us.

This catalog features flags flying from California to New York City to Florida-- flags hanging on the sides of buildings, in the windows of suburban homes and storefronts, on a wooden country fence and a barbed wire ranch enclosure, in medical labs, strung between trees in parks, over city streets and everywhere that we are sheltering through this time.

Prayers for the Pandemic; Prayers for Progress is our ongoing public art project happening across the United States. The concept draws inspiration from Tibetan prayer flags made of colorful rectangular cloth that are strung along trails and peaks high in the Himalayas, and used to bless the surrounding area in which they are placed. This project was launched as a response to the current environment. In March, 2020, the coronavirus began to shut down the country. Frontline healthcare workers have been doing amazing heroic work and essential workers are keeping the current state of our society going. Since the murder of George Floyd on Memorial Day, people of all races, all over the world, are raising their voices in support of the Black Lives Matter Movement, fighting against racial injustice and inequality. While we are all living through the coronavirus pandemic, as well as fighting to be heard, seen, live without fear and working toward positive social change, blessings are beneficial. We want to send positive Karma out into the world, and brighten each other's days in the special way that art can do.In this, our second collection, we continue to receive images and stories from artists in the NY/NJ area, as well as across the country. Many artists made and hung their flags in the place they were quarantining, which is not necessarily where they live. Here's some of the flags we received that you will see in the following pages: A set of Jersey City flags used only colored paper and scotch tape to create a burst of light. Crocheted flowers hang from windows and a rooftop in Bayonne, NJ. A flag with Korean lettering made of fabric from the artist's father's office shirts hangs on an Alabama front porch. Relief prints of a snake on a staff, and black and red crosses, are posted on fencing in a field in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Ethereal painted silk flags floating over a waterway in western Massachusetts. A cut, collaged paper flag covers a fire escape in Brooklyn. The rising sun flies from the balcony of a house in West Virginia. A calligraphic message of hope is spread across library windows in Croton-on-Hudson, NY. The artists' stories and messages shared with us to us are vital to the project as well. One artist tells of her personal experience with the virus, another cared for her mother, and one artist gathered a dozen friends to create a collaborative project. Volume 3 of Drawing Rooms' Nationwide Public Arts Project. The third wave of artists from New Jersey and locations across the country have put out their prayers flags at their homes, apartment buildings and college campuses, in woods and public parks. While many are isolated, and travel is limited by coronavirus, these artists have found a way to reach out to their local community and also create an interconnected community with each other through the prayer flag project. The collected images of their works on-site, and their thoughts and responses to life during the pandemic, are brought together in Drawing Rooms' presentation in this volume available as both an online and a print book. This third part of the project includes a Jersey City display at the Topps Building, outside Drawing Rooms gallery, which spans over 70 feet down Newark Ave. Collaborations and shared concepts and materials between the group of ten women, which includes two sets of sisters and three collaborations, make for a unified front, full of brightness, movement and sound. Prayers for the Pandemic; Prayers for Progress, which began 5/15/20, curated by Anne Trauben, is an ongoing nation-wide public art project by Drawing Rooms, Jersey City, NJ. The exhibition asks artists to create prayer flags, drawing inspiration from Tibetan prayer flags which bless the surrounding area in which they are placed.This project responds to the world we find currently ourselves in. At the time of the writing of this book, we are still in the pandemic & approaching the completion of year three. Nearly three years ago, In mid winter of 2020, the Covid-19 Pandemic hit the world like wildfire & changed everyone's life on the planet in a very short amount of time. Let me introduce myself, my name is Joe Vitale Jr, my whole life I've been a devout Christian & I knew God would take care of us through this once in a generation event. In March of 2020, when our state went into lockdown, I felt directed by God to start a nightly prayer through the length of the pandemic. I continued my nightly prayer into 2021 and beyond. I wanted to help others by spreading God's Word, sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ & hopefully, through the name & power of Jesus, alleviate some anxieties many were feeling. This book contains every prayer from March 17th, 2021 through March 16th, 2022, all 365 days of the second year of the pandemic. The chapters are laid out in months & each day is numbered and dated. Every Bible verse mentioned in this book throughout the year is listed in the back. For those of you seeking God & wanting to have a relationship with Him, I have included the sinner's prayer throughout the book. I had received many requests to release a book like this & once again, I felt directed by God to do this. This book is not only a day by day account of the prayers said, but it gives you a look into what we faced during that uncertain time. I hope that these prayers give you hope through the power of Jesus Christ.
