Some years ago the N etherlands Research Committee for European Refugee Problems commissioned an investigation into the adjustment problems of foreigners who for various reasons have taken refuge in the Netherlands. This investigation is of great interest. In these times of rapid change we all have our problems of adjustment. How very much greater these problems must be for those who had to leave all they cherished behind them and start all over again in new and strange surroundings. I wholeheartedlyendorse the Committee's initiative in publish ing in this monograph the main results of the investigation. These results should be useful in the work of the organizations concerned with refugee welfare. But in wider circles, both in the Netherlands and abroad, this publication should also awaken interest in the refugee question in general and the situation of refugees in the Nether lands in particular. How necessary this interest still is has been shown once again by the recent events in Hungary, which brought untold misery to many thousands. These Hungarian refugees and countless others who before them fled can best be helped to adjust to the new patterns of life if all who in their daily lives come into contact with them approach them in the right way. But to be able to do that we must first realize the difficulties the refugees have to contend with. Therefore the study of this monograph should be of posi tive value to many people.

First published in 1953, The Refugee in the Post-War World presents a comprehensive survey on the global refugee situation after the Second World War. Chapter I and II of Part I attempt a definition of what is meant by a refugee and states the problems to which the refugees give rise for the receiving countries and the international community; chapter III contains a brief account of the work of the international bodies concerned with refugees from the First World War onwards; and chapter IV tells the story of the various ethnic and national groups of refugees after the Second World War. The other parts give an analysis of the refugees’ situation in the different countries. The latter are classified in two ways: according to their place on the map and to their capacity to absorb refugees. Each chapter describing the refugee position in a particular country is divided further into three sections: an introduction intended to afford a bird's eye view of the general refugee problem in that country; a second section setting forth the main legislative provisions applicable to aliens and, more specially to refugees; and the third which gives an account of the refugees’ economic and social conditions. This is an important historical reference work for scholars and researchers of refugee studies, international relations, political studies, and immigration studies.

Coming To Terms With Superdiversity written by Peter Scholten and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-11-26 with Social Science categories.

This open access book discusses Rotterdam as clear example of a superdiverse city that is only reluctantly coming to terms with this new reality. Rotterdam, as is true for many post-industrial cities, has seen a considerable backlash against migration and diversity: the populist party Leefbaar Rotterdam of the late Pim Fortuyn is already for many years the largest party in the city. At the same time Rotterdam has become a majority minority city where the people of Dutch descent have become a numerical minority themselves. The book explores how Rotterdam is coming to terms with superdiversity, by an analysis of its migration history of the city, the composition of the migrant population and the Dutch working class population, local politics and by a comparison with Amsterdam and other cities. As such it contributes to a better understanding not just of how and why super-diverse cities emerge but also how and why the reaction to a super-diverse reality can be so different. By focusing on different aspects of superdiversity, coming from different angles and various disciplinary backgrounds, this book will be of interest to students and scholars in migration, policy sciences, urban studies and urban sociology, as well as policymakers and the broader public.

Boundaries And Their Meanings In The History Of The Netherlands written by and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-06-17 with History categories.

Traditionally, the term boundary applies to the demarcation between a physical place and another physical place, most commonly associated with lines on a map As the essays in this volume demonstrate, however, a boundary can also function in a more broadly conceptual manner. A boundary becomes not an “imaginary line” but a tool for thinking about how to separate any two elements, whether ideas, events, etc., into categories by which they become comprehensible and distinct. The scholar contributors seek not simply to discern the boundaries, but, and perhaps more importantly, to understand the process of delination, and its consequences. With its maverick history and grass-root political traditions, the Netherlands provides an auspicious setting to examine the historical function of boundaries both real and imagined.
