Based on the premise that what students know before they read an assignment will strongly influence what they learn by reading that assignment, this booklet provides strategies that teachers can use to evoke and enhance students' background knowledge in relation to content area reading. Following a foreword and preface, the first major section of the booklet discusses readiness to read in the content areas, including content and word knowledge, motivation, and attention. The second section provides guidelines for asking and answering questions before reading. The third section contains information on forecasting a passage, while the fourth section discusses preteaching content vocabulary. Previewing graphically represented information is discussed in the fifth section. The sixth and final section covers guidelines for selecting prereading activities, keeping in mind the characteristics of the learners and materials and the expected learning goals. (HTH)

Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject English - Pedagogy, Didactics, Literature Studies, grade: sehr gut, University of Hamburg (Fachbereich Erziehungswissenschaften), course: Proseminar Einführung in die Englisch-Didaktik, language: English, abstract: Creative approaches to textual work play an important role in EFL1 lessons as they offer a great potential with regard to developing language skills and intercultural learning and as they are very popular among pupils. In terms of the negative results of PISA, the approach to reading comprehension has immensely changed. Didactics have found out that tackling (literary) texts in the traditional way hardly motivates learnes to achieve good results. Therefore, it is more useful to centre topics and literary texts which have significance for the learners, treat them in a different way and employing new methods, such as reading different texts in the English lessons (for example "Harry Potter") and applying creative writing. Reading, writing, learning English should make sense to the pupils. "ESL2/EFL learners need a reason to read."3 Fortunately, these changes are even visible in the current curricula guidelines. In my term paper, I will lay the focus on pre-, while- and post-reading-activities with regard to literature. Firstly, I will present the aims and advantages of while- and postreading- activities, then I will carry out a practical approach by suggesting a short story ("Peter's Beach") and presenting some post-reading-activities and discussing them. Reading is the most used language skill, since we use it on every step we take. Therefore, it is important to teach it in the English classroom and improve the students' reading skills by using the three types of activities: pre-reading, while-reading and post-reading activities. The aim of this thesis was to explore what reading actually is, how to improve the students' reading skills, to evaluate the pre-reading, while-reading and post-reading activities in coursebooks and in other activity resource books for teachers, and to prove that there is an important role of these activities and that the appropriate usage of them in the classroom is of great importance as well. This thesis first focuses on what reading is, what being a reader means and what the purposes for reading are. Then it moves on to show how to teach the skill of reading, of what phases it consists and how to select the most appropriate text for a certain class. It then presents the three types of reading activities: pre-reading, while-reading and post-reading activities, different types of reading strategies (skimming, scanning, intensive reading and extensive reading) and how to develop reading skills with the help of graded readers. Next it shows the analysis of the pre-reading, while reading and post-reading activities in the coursebooks and in other activity resource books for teachers. The findings suggest that sometimes the coursebook activities are not sufficiently interesting or diverse or that sometimes a class needs a different approach to achieve certain reading purposes. In such cases, the teachers can revert to different activity resource books. However, very often it is the reading activities in the coursebooks that are the most efficient and the teacher needs to know how to motivate the students. The observation of all of the activities showed that the reading (pre-, while-, and post-) activities are of major importance to help students understand texts and learn new words, grammar and different reading strategies and also to promote love for reading.
