In this book I describe precision spectroscopy of ultracold Rubidium triplet molecules using lasers to couple states in different molecular potentials. In the present work the states in the triplet ground state potential (a-potential) and in the first excited triplet potentials were studied in detail. These states are of great importance for transferring weakly bound molecules to the ro-vibrational triplet ground state of the a-potential via states in the excited potential. As most experiments start from molecules in their singlet ground state (X-potential), the triplet states were hard to access via dipole transitions and remained largely unexplored. The measurements presented in this book are the first detailed study of diatomic Rubidium molecules in these states.

"This thesis describes important steps towards the creation of ultracold RbSr ground-state molecules. These open-shell polar molecules will be employed as a platform for quantum simulation of strongly interacting systems. The strong interaction is due to the large electric dipole moment of the molecules. In addition they possess a magnetic moment, which will allow us to control the interactions by magnetic fields. The first step toward RbSr molecules is the experimental realization of an ultracold mixture of 87Rb and 84Sr. The Rb and Sr atoms are brought to quantum degeneracy by means of sympathetic laser and evaporative cooling of Rb by Sr. The doubly degenerate gases are loaded into an optical lattice resulting in many lattice sites occupied by one Sr and one Rb atom. Such a sample is an excellent starting point for the coherent transfer of atom pairs into molecules. Before the transfer can be achieved, high-precision spectroscopic data of the RbSr molecules has to be obtained. Two isotopic combinations, 87Rb-84Sr and 87Rb-88Sr are investigated by photoassociation spectroscopy. The spectroscopic measurements show that the coherent association of atom pairs into molecules will be easier in the isotopic combination 87Rb-87Sr instead of the one used for this thesis. In addition the spectroscopic studies lead to the precise determination of the interspecies scattering length of all Rb-Sr isotopic combinations."--Samenvatting auteur.

Precision spectroscopy measurements have contributed significantly to our understanding of the fundamental structure of atoms. Here we present an experiment involving a new precision spectroscopic technique using a femtosecond optical frequency comb to excite two-photon transitions in rubidium. A femtosecond optical frequency comb is an ultrashort, pulsed laser with tens of thousands of frequencies, equally spaced in frequency-space. These frequencies can be used to excite atoms to specific transitions. The frequency comb is a versatile instrument that can avoid many of the experimental uncertainties that are associated with other spectroscopic techniques. The specific technique we use is called velocity selective resonance, and it is used to eliminate Doppler broadening in our spectra. In addition, the setup could be cheaply and easily altered to study different atoms or systems. In this experiment, we study this new precision measurement technique of using an optical frequency comb for spectroscopy.

This book illustrates the history of Atomic Physics and shows how its most recent advances allow the possibility of performing precise measurements and achieving an accurate control on the atomic state. Written in an introductory style, this book is addressed to advanced undergraduate and graduate students, as well as to more experienced researchers who need to remain up-to-date with the most recent advances. The book focuses on experimental investigations, illustrating milestone experiments and key experimental techniques, and discusses the results and the challenges of contemporary research. Emphasis is put on the investigations of precision physics: from the determination of fundamental constants of Nature to tests of General Relativity and Quantum Electrodynamics; from the realization of ultra-stable atomic clocks to the precise simulation of condensed matter theories with ultracold gases. The book discusses these topics while tracing the evolution of experimental Atomic Physics from traditional laser spectroscopy to the revolution introduced by laser cooling, which allows the manipulation of atoms at a billionth of a degree above absolute zero and reveals new frontiers of precision in atomic spectroscopy.

This thesis unites the fields of optical atomic clocks and ultracold molecular science, laying the foundation for optical molecular measurements of unprecedented precision. Building upon optical manipulation techniques developed by the atomic clock community, this work delves into attaining surgical control of molecular quantum states. The thesis develops two experimental observables that one can measure with optical-lattice-trapped ultracold molecules: extremely narrow optical spectra, and angular distributions of photofragments that are ejected when the diatomic molecules are dissociated by laser light pulses. The former allows molecular spectroscopy approaching the level of atomic clocks, leading into molecular metrology and tests of fundamental physics. The latter opens the field of ultracold chemistry through observation of quantum effects such as matter-wave interference of photofragments and tunneling through reaction barriers. The thesis also describes a discovery of a new method of thermometry that can be used near absolute zero temperatures for particles lacking cycling transitions, solving a long-standing experimental problem in atomic and molecular physics.
