Interregional relations and impact have long attracted much attention in Mesoamerican and Andean archaeology. The same has not been true of Central America, where the relative impact of interregional relations nad more local forces on the processes of social change has remained an open question. In this volume, regional settlement study in San Ramón de Alajuela, Costa Rica, is the point of departure for a comparison of trajectories of social change in several nearby regions. Murillo argues that substantial differences in the nature and pacing of these trajectories indicate that local forces were considerably stronger than any impacts they had on each other. Complete text in English and Spanish.

The authors trace the evolution of Costa Rican culture and institutions from pre-Columbian times through the late 1990s. Particularly concerned with the change wrought by the economic crisis of the 1980s, they base their portrayal on interviews with Costa Ricans; observations of many facets--from coffee plantation work to the deliberations of the Legislature; and readings of journalists, essayists, poets, historians, and others. With over 25 percent of its land set aside in national parks and other protected areas, Costa Rica is renowned worldwide as "the green republic." In this very readable history of conservation in Costa Rica, Sterling Evans explores the establishment of the country's national park system as a response to the rapid destruction of its tropical ecosystems due to the expansion of export-related agriculture. Drawing on interviews with key players in the conservation movement, as well as archival research, Evans traces the emergence of a conservation ethic among Costa Ricans and the tangible forms it has taken. In Part I, he describes the development of the national park system and "the grand contradiction" that conservation occurred simultaneously with massive deforestation in unprotected areas. In Part II, he examines other aspects of Costa Rica's conservation experience, including the important roles played by environmental education and nongovernmental organizations, campesino and indigenous movements, ecotourism, and the work of the National Biodiversity Institute.

Many cities in Latin America and the Caribbean are experiencing a water crisis as sources become exhausted or degraded. Urbanization, deteriorating infrastructures with a lack of funds for repairs, and inadequate polices are conspiring to cause water shortages. People are becoming concentrated in megacities, such as Mexico City with a population of almost 23 million, that have outgrown their water-supply systems. Urban areas are increasingly incapable of supplying water and sewer systems for their populations. By the year 2020, more than 500 million inhabitants of Latin America (two-thirds of.

Costa Rican novelist Fabian Dobles (1918-1997) is arguably one of the most important formative writers within the context of Costa Rican and Central American literary history. Yet until now there has been no book-length analysis in either English or Spanish of his narrative contributions. Isolated studies generally place him within the realist and regionalist tendencies of the period and emphasize his mimetic representation of the world. This book, however, reevaluates Dobles' novels and short stories from the perspective of subaltern and postcolonial studies and offers the first theoretically consistent, comprehensive analysis of his narrative corpus.
