Surface ship and submarine magnetic field signatures have been exploited for over 80 years by naval influence mines, and both underwater and airborne surveillance systems. The generating mechanism of the four major shipboard sources of magnetic fields is explained, along with a detailed description of the induced and permanent ferromagnetic signature characteristics. A brief historical summary of magnetic naval mine development during World War II is followed by a discussion of important improvements found in modern weapons, including an explanation of the damage mechanism for non-contact explosions. A strategy for selecting an optimum mine actuation threshold is given. The objective of this work was to develop a method to predict the magnetic field around a magnetic source. This knowledge is useful for developing a way to reduce the magnetic signature. A marine vessel is an example of a magnetic source for which magnetic silencing is desired. Because of the shape of the vessel, the work focuses on the prediction of the field due to an elongated magnetic source. The set of harmonic-expansion coefficients of magnetic scalar potential or so-called magnetic multipole image is used for characterization of a magnetic source. The multipole image of the source is restored by application of selective functions to the measured magnetic fields obtained from magnetic sensors located in the vicinity of the source. The magnetic field beyond the sensor array can then be predicted from the restored multipole image. Five standard sources were used to create the fields. Prolate spheroidal array, cylindrical array, circular planar array, and rectangular planar sensor arrays were tested. A virtual array created by a movement of a ship over a line of sensors was also tested with a simplified model of ship dynamics. Non-idealities in localization, orientation of the sensors, and noise were included in the tests in order to simulate the real measurement environment. Under a noisy environment, the selective function method worked well for all arrays, except for rectangular array which was sensitive to the noise. A Truncated Singular Value Decomposition method was developed to reduce this sensitivity and it yielded a more accurate field prediction under a noisy environment.

In the vast blue ocean, ships of different navies operate far from each other and are generally not in visual range. However, a ship can be uniquely identified based on a number of emissions that are characteristic to each and are called signatures. These include acoustic signature from machinery and flow, heat or infrared signature from exhaust, radar cross section from hull surfaces, magnetic signature from hull material, electric signature from corrosion protection systems etc. These signatures are used by surveillance and tracking sensors for attacking ships in general and warships, in particular. Survivability at sea requires management of all platform signatures to produce a net effect of reduced vulnerability. Anti-ship missiles pose the greatest threat to ships at sea. Prior to the Second World War, studies were carried out in parallel on the use of radar and infrared seekers in missiles for detection, identification and homing. For the materials available in the 1940s, radar seekers gave better results and hence, have become the standard fit. Over the years, advances in material sciences have improved the capabilities of infrared seekers and today, missiles have several guidance/seeker options that include radar, electro- optical camera and infrared imaging. Infrared homing is preferred for terminal guidance because of its inherent immunity to jamming techniques. A stealthy naval platform remains undetected and therefore can be deployed closer to the target to fulfill its mission with lesser risk of damage and associated causalities. Signatures used for ship detection include both underwater and above water. Signatures used by underwater weapons like torpedoes and mines are acoustics, magnetics, wake homing and extremely low frequency emissions (ELFE). Anti-ship missiles use above water signatures that include laser cross section (LCS), radar cross section (RCS), air borne noise and infrared (IR).

An effort has been initiated to develop a portable system capable of measuring the magnetic signature of a surface ship. The system will employ a formation of multiple AUVs, each equipped with a magnetometer. The objective is to measure total magnetic field at specified locations relative to the surface ship. In the first step of system development, an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) has been equipped with a tri-axial fluxgate magnetometer and used to perform preliminary magnetic field measurements. Measurements of this type will be used to calibrate an individual AUV/magnetometer system. Initial measurements appear to meet necessary measurement requirements on noise floor as the standard deviation of the indicated total magnetic field was observed to be 21nT while the AUV proceeded on a straight, level path. Extended Kalman Filters (EKF) are being developed for on-board AUV navigation and post-processing a best estimate for AUV vehicle position. Navigation experiments were conducted to evaluate AUV navigation and position estimation. In these experiments, an independent high-accuracy topside-track system was used to provide ground-truth for comparison. The average error in the on-board estimated position of the AUV used for navigation was 1.84m. The post processing EKF was designed to use all available sensor data. This EKF had an average position error of 0.74m when compared to the ground-truth. Overall, the AUV was able to navigate to an average distance of 1.95m from its desired waypoint track.
