The purpose of this experimental study was to examine the role of a Transformational, Transactional, and Laissez-faire leader in the perceived likelihood of employees exhibiting Organizational Citizenship Behaviors (OCBs) at work. The extent to which employees identify with their leaders was also examined as a mediator on the relationship between leadership style and OCB performance. OCBs are behaviors that are not directly required of an employee, but that benefit the overall organization by promoting excellence while allowing employees to go beyond the job requirements. Previous research suggests that Transformational Leaders inspire and instill values in employees through empowerment and positive relationships (Bass, 2007; Bass & Riggio, 2006; Carter, Mossholder, Feild, & Armenakis, 2014; Eagly, Johannesen-Schmidt, & van Engen, 2003), and that employees that perform OCBs greatly benefit organizations (Akinbode, 2011; Finkelstein & Penner, 2004; Organ & Ryan, 1995; N. P. Podsakoff, Whiting, Podsakoff, & Blume, 2009; Shaffer, Li, & Bagger, 2015). One of three vignettes describing one of the three leadership styles (e.g., Transformational, Transactional, Laissez-faire) was shown to 200 employed participants working at least part time (i.e., 20 hours per week) under a supervisor via an online survey using MTurk. After rating their respective leader (as described in the vignette) on the Global Transformational Leadership (GTL) scale, participants completed an identification with leader inventory and an OCB-checklist, indicating likelihood of OCB performance under their particular leader. Multivariate analysis of variance was utilized to examine the effect of leadership style on OCB performance. Further, correlational analyses were used to examine the relationship between GTL scores and OCB-Checklist scores. Finally, a mediation analysis with identification with the leader mediating the relationship between leadership style and OCB performance was conducted. Results showed individuals in the Transformational Leader Condition reported the highest likelihood of performing OCBs, followed by Transactional Leader and finally Laissez-faire Leader. Identification with the leader significantly mediated the relationship between Transformational leadership and OCB performance. Finally, individuals that perceived their leader as more Transformational were also more likely to report performing OCBs. Implications of these findings for OCBs in the workplace are discussed.

This study examined the relationship between servant leadership of the principal with Organizational Citizenship Behavior (OCB) and school climate. Servant leadership, a leadership behavior that emphasizes personal growth of followers, has a useful research history in business but limited exposure in public schools. Organizational Citizenship Behavior (OCB) is an organizational construct that describes non-contractual behaviors of workers that contribute to the success of the organization. The climate of a school is defined as the working environment as perceived by the teachers within the school. The people-centered behaviors of a servant leader principal promote positive social reciprocal interactions between the members within the organization. These relationships in turn foster organizational citizenship behaviors within the school and provide an open/healthy school environment. This study utilized data gathered from 708 participants within a random sample of forty-one public high schools in Alabama. Three reliable instruments were used in this study: Servant Leadership Survey (SLS), Organizational Climate Index (OCI), Organizational Citizenship Behavior Scale (OCB Scale). The first hypothesis of the study tested the relationship of SL with OCB and School Climate. The findings for this study supported a previous study that servant leadership behaviors of the principal are significantly related to the school climate. As servant leadership behaviors increase the climate of the school improves. Findings also reveal that servant leadership behaviors are significantly related to the OCB within the school. As servant leadership behaviors increase the level of OCB within the school rises. The second hypothesis of the study tested the predictability of servant leadership and OCB on the perceived school climate. Regression analysis results identified OCB as the greater predictor of school climate. Further examination of the servant leadership and OCB with each climate dimension provided a more comprehensive examination of the relationships. OCB was found to be a greater predictor of collegial leadership and professional teacher behavior. Surprisingly, results of the analysis revealed socioeconomic status (SES) was the greater predictor of the academic press and environmental press within the school climate.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between organizational variables (procedural justice, transformational leadership, job satisfaction, identification with leader, organizational commitment) and prosocial behaviors (Organizational Citizenship Behaviors) as well as harmful behaviors (Counterproductive Work Behaviors). Previous research treats OCB and CWB as two ends of a spectrum, with the assumption that individuals that engage in one kind of behavior refrain from the other. However, the present study aimed to examine intricate relationships between organizational variables to show that individuals can engage in both types of behavior, even in the same day. This is due to the intentionality and direction of targeted behaviors. Specifically, OCBs and CWBs can be targeted at individuals or at the organization as a whole. A structural equation model was used to explain the complex relationships between these variables. Specifically, it was hypothesized that procedural justice is positively related to job satisfaction and organizational commitment, which in turn influence both OCB and CWB. Additionally, transformational leadership was hypothesized to be positively associated with job satisfaction, identification with leader, and organizational commitment. Approximately 300 participants were recruited from two sources (one public health and one online panel) to participate in the online web survey. Findings from the present study indicate that both identification with leader and organizational commitment mediate the relationship between transformational leadership and OCB. Organizational commitment also mediated the relationship between procedural justice and OCB. Finally, similar to the OCB outcomes, identification with leader mediated the relationship between transformational leadership and CWB; however, unlike the outcomes with OCB, organizational commitment did not predict CWB. Results from this study identify key factors such as transformational leadership, identification with the leader and organizational commitment on which organizations could focus in predicting the behaviors they desire and discouraging behaviors that are harmful.

The role of leadership in an organizational system has remained of central concern in organization studies. Over the time, the emergence of various theories has unfolded the unique influential roles of leadership embedded in organizational management. Among various leadership styles and theories, a relatively new concept of Authentic Leadership (AL) is worthy of attention with respected to the changing demands of the media industry. The origin of the concept of authenticity is found in ancient Greek philosophy and it is defined in history as “being true to oneself”. Trust is the basic constituent based on which people can count on one another and work together in a conducive environment. AL is an idea to leadership that focuses on developing leader's legitimacy via “honest relationships with followers”. In this study, AL is measured through four dimensions that include Self-awareness, Balanced Processing, Moral Perspective and Relational Transparency. Media is expected to be a watchdog on affairs of the state and government, therefore, public requires media industry to be responsive, transparent and unbiased based on principles of ethics and true reporting. In order to achieve a positive environment and culture in the organization, this study focuses on the idea of Organization Citizenship Behavior (OCB) in connection with AL. This paper investigates the relationship between the said variables and tries to find out the impact of AL on OCB, for that matter, a quantitative research strategy has been followed.Respondents for this study were conveniently selected from bureau offices of six news channels making the sample size to be 220.The analysis led to the conclusion that all the dimensions of AL were positively related with OCB. Moreover, the regression analysis aided in concluding that the four dimensions of AL under consideration contributed approximately 61.3% in predicting the dependent variable i.e. OCB.
