Equations of state (EoS) have proved to be a reliable tool in chemical engineering thermodynamics for modeling the physical properties of complex systems. Various types of EoS have been developed based on different theories. For various reasons, some have become more popular for use in industry and academia. Of the popular EoS, two were chosen for investigation in this thesis. The first one was the Perturbed Chain- Statistical Associating Fluid Theory (PC-SAFT), an equation derived based on statistical mechanics and the second was the Peng-Robinson (PR) EoS, a cubic EoS commonly used in industry. In this work, the prediction capabilities of these two EoS were compared for several properties. The analysis began with an evaluation of their use in the prediction of the saturation properties of pure components and derivative properties from ambient conditions to the supercritical range. The particular derivative properties studied include the isochoric and isobaric heat capacities, the speed of sound, and the isothermal compressibility. In general, it was concluded that PC-SAFT outperforms PR in all cases. Next, the same primary and derivative properties of several binary and a select ternary mixture were studied. To improve agreement with experimental data, a binary interaction parameter was introduced and fitted to binary mixture vapor - liquid equilibria (VLE) data. This procedure drastically improved the accuracy of the models compared to the case where no binary interaction parameter used for the case of VLE predictions. However, for the case of the derivative properties, the use of the binary interaction parameter to ensure a more accurate representation of the interactions between molecules had only a marginal effect on the prediction of these properties. Finally, phase equilibria of hydrates were studied. As EoS for fluids are not designed to predict the properties of solid phases, the van der Waals-Platteeuw model was incorporated to allow for the prediction of three-phase equilibrium conditions of various hydrate formers. Specifically, this work focused on the equilibrium of a water-rich liquid phase, a hydrate phase and a vapor phase rich in a hydrate former. In all cases, calculations of the solid hydrate phase properties are based on the Kihara potential. This potential requires three parameters to be defined; initial values for which were found through a review of the literature. The accuracy of the predictions of the three-phase equilibrium is highly dependent on the reliability of these parameters. Thus, one of the parameters, the so-called Îæ parameter, was fitted to hydrate equilibrium data and resulted in a significant improvement in the accuracy of predictions of both PC-SAFT and PR EoS. The new set of parameters was then used to predict the three-phase equilibrium of several binary, ternary and quaternary mixtures of hydrate forming agents. Several conclusions are drawn from this work, including the observation that the accuracy of the models is reduced when the number of components increases. Information necessary to solve scientific or engineering problems is often so vast, that the need arises to lump information together into a more manageable subset in order to proceed. The idea of lumping is one which is used, more or less consciously, in a large variety of fields. The thermodynamics and kinetic behavior of multicomponent mixtures is an area where the requirements of lumping have been clearly identified and the techniques and results of lumping have been analyzed in considerable detail. This book comprises the proceedings of a Symposium on Kinetic and Thermodynamic Lumping of Multicomponent Mixtures which was held at the American Chemical Society Meeting in Atlanta, GA, in April 1991. Papers presented at the symposium consisted of both invited and contributed papers. Each invited paper was a review of a subfield within the landscape of the symposium while the contributed papers contain detailed analyses of specific problems. The symposium brought together active researchers in this field to report on and discuss the progress which has been made in the lumping of mixtures of very many components for a number of different applications, and to identify the important problem areas which still remain. This volume will serve both as an introduction to anyone entering the field, and as a reference work for more experienced researchers.

Abstract: A solution of groups technique was developed for use with fluctuation solution theory. The general expressions for calculation of pressure and chemical potential changes from some fixed reference states have been shown. A new corresponding states theory correlation for direct correlation function integrals was proposed and used with the group contribution technique for calculation of pressure changes during compression for several n-alkanes and methanol. This work gives a detailed analysis of the RISM theory of liquids. Shown are new results for perturbation theory and a generalized compressibility theorem for RISM fluids. The use of the RISM theory for calculation of thermodynamic properties of real fluids also is given. The use of hard sphere reference fluids for development of equations of state has been explored. A generalized hard sphere equation of state was developed. It was shown that the most accurate hard sphere equation of state is not the best reference system for construction of a liquid phase equation of state of the van der Waals form. This book is concerned with the prediction of thermodynamic and transport properties of gases and liquids. The prediction of such properties is essential for the solution of many problems encountered in chemical and process engineering as well as in other areas of science and technology. The book aims to present the best of those modern methods which are capable of practical application. It begins with basic scientific principles and formal results which are subsequently developed into practical methods of prediction. Numerous examples, supported by a suite of computer programmes, illustrate applications of the methods. The book is aimed primarily at the student market (for both undergraduate and taught postgraduate courses) but it will also be useful for those engaged in research and for chemical and process engineering professionals.
