Studies have consistently shown that teachers' ratings of behavior were predictive of academic difficulties. While research has clearly indicated that behavior has a reciprocal relationship with academic achievement, there is a scarcity of research on the relationship between outcomes on high stakes tests and student behavior. Early identification of children at risk for academic difficulties is vital for successful intervention and remediation. Therefore, this researcher investigated use of a brief behavior screener as a predictor of students at risk for failing a high stakes test. Results from the Behavior Assessment System for Children-Teacher Rating Scale-Child Screener (BASC-TRS-C Screener) provided an assessment of behavior. Georgia's Criterion Referenced Test - Reading and Math scores provided achievement in reading and math. An analysis of data on 636 second through fifth grade participants revealed a significant inverse relationship between teacher ratings of student behavior and achievement. Thirteen of the fifteen models suggested that teachers' ratings of behavior indicated with greater accuracy students at risk for academic difficulties than did the model without the behavior ratings. While two models were not significant, they clearly suggested an inverse relationship between behavior and achievement. Logistic Regression analyses suggested that the BASC-TRS-C Screener predicted with 90% accuracy the pass fail classification group associated with the score. The odds ratio suggested that with each point decrease on the BASC-TRS-C Screener score, (in which high scores equal greater behavior concerns) the chances of passing the Criterion Referenced Competency Test reading high stakes test increased by 5%. The purpose of this study was to assess the relative contribution of teacher and tutor ratings of inattentive behavior in two different instructional settings in predicting students' performance on fraction concepts and whole-number calculations. Classroom teachers rated each student's attentive behavior in a whole-class setting and tutors rated each student's attentive behavior in an intensive small-group setting. The sample was 131 fourth-grade students identified as at risk for developing mathematics difficulties (MD) and randomly assigned to fraction tutoring. Teachers and tutors rated each student's inattentive behavior in the 10th week of the 12-week intervention period. On average, tutors rated students as more attentive than teachers. Also, tutor ratings had greater predictive power than teacher ratings on fraction concepts, but neither set of ratings uniquely predicted performance on whole-number calculations. Possible explanations for findings and directions for future research are discussed.

Teachers' ability to manage student behavior in their classroom is a powerful predictor of student social and academic outcomes. A concise observational measure of teachers management skills could improve teacher training and performance evaluation, but few such measures exist. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to revise and evaluate the psychometric properties of an observational rating of teachers' use of effective classroom management strategies. Participants were 65 regular education teachers and their students who were observed in their classroom. The results of an exploratory principal components analysis identified two latent variables: Instructional Efficiency and Rules & Behavioral Standards. The measure demonstrated strong validity based on a review by a panel of experts and correlations with student behavior. Moreover, reliability was assessed and supported by computing the test-retest coefficient, inter-rater reliability, and coefficient alpha. The results of this study provide preliminary evidence supporting this measure as a psychometrically sound instrument.--Abstract.

While high quality ECE programs can help all children acquire academic and social-emotional skills, there are persistent disparities in access to these learning environments. One source of the disparities is children being suspended or expelled. In the 2017-18 school year, Black students represented 15 percent of student enrollment but 38 percent of students who received one or more out-of-school suspensions. Young students who are expelled or suspended are up to 10 times more likely to drop out of high school, experience academic failure and grade retention, and face incarceration than those who are not. While there has been a focus on children's socio-emotional deficits and SES as drivers of problem behaviors, little is known about which teacher characteristics are likely to predict how they rate children's behaviors. Teachers are important agents in helping to address school discipline disparities. The purpose of this study was to examine whether teacher background and beliefs predict their reports of aggressive and hyperactive child behavior, which in turn may influence which children are recommended for punitive exclusionary discipline. This study used secondary data analysis to examine nationally representative Head Start teacher and child data from the Family and Child Experiences Survey, 2014. 1,850 children and their 246 teachers were included in the analytic sample. Variations in teacher-reported child behavior scores were examined by child race/ethnicity and sex. Hierarchical Linear Models (accounting for grouping of children into classrooms/teachers) were used to examine teacher characteristics (highest grade, field of highest degree, beliefs about developmentally appropriate practice) and teacher beliefs and attitudes about family engagement (including family-teacher communication, teacher respect for families, and teacher family-specific knowledge) to determine whether these factors predicted child externalizing behavior ratings. Teachers' field of highest degree, beliefs about developmentally appropriate practice, and attitudes and beliefs about family engagement were significant predictors of teacher ratings of children's externalizing behaviors. Policy implications and recommendation include increasing training and supports for teachers and ECE leaders around family engagement and social emotional development as well as recommendations for diversifying and retaining the ECE workforce.
