Complete angular distributions for the 3H(p, n)3He reaction were measured at 2.5 and 4.0 MeV with the 1H(t, n)3He reaction used to obtain the backward yields. Because the distributions are peaked about 17% more strongly in the backward direction than the best previous elevation suggests (based on extrapolated data), the 3H(p, n)3He reaction cross sections below 5 MeV were re-evaluated without the extrapolated data. Although the 12C(n,p)12B and 12C(n,d)11B reactions are of interest in several fields of basic and applied Nuclear Physics the present knowledge of these two cross-sections is far from being accurate and reliable, with both evaluations and data showing sizable discrepancies. As part of the challenging n_TOF program on (n,cp) nuclear reactions study, the energy differential cross-sections of the 12C(n,p)12B and 12C(n,d)11 B reactions have been measured at CERN from the reaction thresholds up to 30 MeV neutron energy. Both measurements have been recently performed at the long flight-path (185 m) experimental area of the n_TOF facility at CERN using a pure (99.95%) rigid graphite target and two silicon telescopes. In this paper an overview of the experiment is presented together with a few preliminary results.

Angular distributions and cross sections were measured by coincidence detection of the Li/sup 6/ pairs for deuteron energies of 8, 10, 12, and 13.5 Mev. The distributions show strong peaking at about 40 and 140 deg, together with a fall-off in the cross section toward 0 deg and 180 deg. The 8-Mev distribution shows the effect of the strong Coulomb barrier on the cross section. The cross section decreases rapidly for deuteron energy decreases from 8 to 4.85 Mev, and the angular distribution also changes markedly. A DWBA calculation for an 1 = 2 alpha -particle transfer afforded a check on the presence of a direct interaction mechanism at high energy. The calculation fit the peaking at 40 and 140 deg. (D.C.W.).

The excitation curve for the reaction C12(n,2n)C11 has been calculated for energies up to 100 Mev. The calculations were done as described in the preceding letter for the similar reaction of C12 under proton bombardment. The results of the calculations for 50% charge exchange are shown in Figure 1. The calculated cross section for the reaction at 90 Mev is: .011 barns for 100% charge exchange and .013 barns for 50% charge exchange. The experimental value is 0.025 ± .004 barns. The ratio of the cross section of the reaction C12(pnpn)C11 to the cross section of the above reaction at 90 Mev is 5.8 for 100% charge exchange and 3.8 for 50% charge exchange. The experimental ratio is 2.7 at 90 Mev. This difference in cross sections between the two reactions is established by two factors. Firstly, there is the part played by charge exchange in the C12(pnpn)C11 reaction which leads to excited N12 with the subsequent boiling off of a proton, while a similar exchange process cannot take place for the C12(n2n)C11 reaction. Secondly, there is the difference between the contributions of the knock out process as a result of the difference in the n - p and the n - n cross sections, which favors the p + C12 knock out reaction. It will be noted that the parts of the reactions which go through excited C12, while practically equal, are so small that they do not greatly affect either reaction. Although the results of these calculations do not agree too closely with the experimental results, the results are probably as good as are to be expected because of the crudity of the assumed model. The results do, though, seem to give a good qualitative picture of the contributing factors affecting the total reactions. Finally, it would seem that the assumption of 50% charge exchange gives better agreement.
