Il n'y a pas d'agriculture. Il n'y a que des agricultures, autant que de terroirs cultivés sur cette terre. On a une assez bonne idée des éléments constitutifs de chaque agriculture, climat et sols, plantes et animaux, marchés, etc. Ce qu'on connaît beaucoup moins bien en revanche, c'est ce que font les agriculteurs (-trices), comment ils préparent leurs champs, comment ils sèment, comment ils récoltent... Car ce sont des détails qui paraissent de si peu d'importance ! Surtout en Afrique, continent dont les traditions techniques restent si honteusement méconnues. Heureusement, il y a des chercheurs dont le courage ne faiblit pas devant l'obstacle. On leur doit le premier ouvrage en langue française sur Les instruments aratoires en Afrique tropicale, paru en 1984. Ce deuxième volume tient les promesses du premier. L'étude des outils n'est pas une fin en soi, mais elle pose des questions redoutablement concrètes. Pour comprendre les outils, il faut se mettre à l'école des paysans et démêler le réseau infiniment complexe de leurs faits et gestes. L'outil est une concrétisation de l'action, c'est une sorte de sculpture où on peut en lire les traces essentielles. C'est d'ailleurs parfois une sculpture tout court, tant certains outils peuvent être beaux. L'étude des outils n'est pas une voie facile. Mais c'est celle qui conduit le plus sûrement vers la compréhension en profondeur de la réalité des agricultures et des sociétés africaines.
