Per tutti gli anni del suo insegnamento Lacan si è impegnato a costituire uno spazio formalizzato, ritagliato sul modello della matematica, idoneo ad un certo esercizio della lettera, (quello proprio alle scienze ma di cui aveva osservato la prevalenza anche nelle formazioni dell'inconscio), per tradurre gli elementi della clinica nella combinatoria asettica di formule, matemi e algoritmi, allo scopo di liberare le nozioni cliniche correnti da ogni contaminazione immaginaria. Il suo intento non era propriamente quello di accreditare genericamente la psicanalisi come una scienza, quanto di costituire un corpus dottrinale trasmissibile, senza indulgere ad uno psicologismo intuitivo, che si prestava a facili deviazioni verso l'omologazione del senso comune. Così egli pervenne, attraverso la strutturazione di un discorso propriamente psicanalitico, ad un'elaborazione teorica non auto-referenziale, che traeva però dall'esperienza dell'inconscio l'esigenza di essere sempre mantenuta ad un elevato livello di tensione formale. Ne deriva per la psicanalisi, che per se stessa si configura come una pratica artigianale della parola, l'obbligo di attenersi a una dottrina del significante e della lettera. Paradossalmente è proprio il rigore teorico della dottrina a permettere alla psicanalisi di mantenere ciò che costituisce il suo pregio, il legame a filo doppio che, nella pratica, connette la sua trama letterale con il sapere inconscio, facendo di essa ciò che Safouan chiama una "scienza testuale". Nell'esperienza dell'inconscio, pur nella loro inesauribile varietà, elementi di sapere invariabilmente ricorrono, che possono essere collazionati e messi in serie al fine di un'elaborazione dottrinale; ma la loro sistemazione in un corpus, per fortuna, non darà mai vita ad un sapere tecnologico, come avviene per le scienze fisico-matematiche.
