The microgram scale isolation and preparation of pure compounds of americium is described. Data are presented to show that the alpha-half-life of the isotope Am241 is 490 ± 14 years. The absorption spectrum of Am(III) in 1M nitric acid in the range 3500-8000 mu is given. The wave lengths of 10 of the most prominent lines in the copper spark emission spectrum of americium are given to the nearest 0.01 Å. Evidence is presented to show that the potential for the Am(III)-Am(IV) couple in acid solution is more negative than -2v and that the potential for the Am(II)-Am(III) couple is more positive than +0.9v.

It was demonstrated that americium metal of approximately 99.5% purity can be produced on the 20- to 25-g scale by lanthanum reduction of the oxide in a very simple apparatus. As predicted from relative vapor pressures, volatile metal impurities such as calcium and magnesium accompany the americium during distillation. The major impurity detected was lanthanum at a concentration predicted for the equilibrium vapor composition above lanthanum metal containing 1% americium. It is speculated that higher purity americium might be produced if distillation were to be discontinued earlier, with no attempt at quantitative recovery of the metal.

This paper reports a new synthesis of pure, microcrystalline Am(OH)3, its characterization by x-ray powder diffraction and infrared spectroscopy, and the calorimetric determination of its enthalpy of solution in dilute hydrochloric acid. From the enthalpy of solution the enthalpy of formation of Am(OH)3 has been calculated to be -1371.2"7.9 kj·mol−1, which represents the first experimental determination of an enthalpy of formation of any actinide hydroxide. The free energy of formation and solubility product constant of Am(OH)3 (K{sub sp} = 7 x 10−31) have been calculated from our enthalpy of formation and entropy estimates and are compared with literature measurements under near-equilibrium conditions. Since many properties of the tripositive lanthanide and actinide ions (e.g., hydrolysis, complex-ion formation, and thermochemistry) change in a regular manner, these properties can be interpreted systematically in terms of ionic size. This paper compares the thermochemistry of Am(OH)3 with thermochemical studies of lanthanide hydroxides. A combined structural and acid-base model is used to explain the systematic differences in enthalpies of solution between the oxides and hydroxides of the 4f(superscript n) and 5f(superscript n) subgroups and to predict solubility-product constants for the actinide(III) hydroxides of Pu through Cf.
