Ideas Have Consequences _ for Adventure! Hard-SF master and renowned John W. Campbell Analog regular Christopher Anvil astounds with mind-bending ideas and their often deadly (and darkly humorous) consequences. Morton Hommel, erstwhile Director of Banner Drug and Vitamin Laboratories, applies the science of pharmacology and the art of sweet reason to a world on the verge of a technological nervous breakdown. These "Hommels" are Anvil at his speculative best¾ all edited by modern-day SF master, Eric Flint! At the publisher's request, this title is sold without DRM (Digital Rights Management).

"Hyperbolic Chaos: A Physicist’s View” presents recent progress on uniformly hyperbolic attractors in dynamical systems from a physical rather than mathematical perspective (e.g. the Plykin attractor, the Smale – Williams solenoid). The structurally stable attractors manifest strong stochastic properties, but are insensitive to variation of functions and parameters in the dynamical systems. Based on these characteristics of hyperbolic chaos, this monograph shows how to find hyperbolic chaotic attractors in physical systems and how to design a physical systems that possess hyperbolic chaos. This book is designed as a reference work for university professors and researchers in the fields of physics, mechanics, and engineering. Dr. Sergey P. Kuznetsov is a professor at the Department of Nonlinear Processes, Saratov State University, Russia.

Qualitative Dynamics And Chaos written by Arnaldo Rodriguez-Gonzalez and has been published by Arnaldo Rodriguez-Gonzalez this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-10-27 with Mathematics categories.

This largely self-contained textbook on qualitative dynamics and chaos is intended for a broad audience of readers who are interested in describing systems that change over time using a mathematically simple, but conceptually rigorous, framework centered around descriptive sequences of symbols. This framework also allows readers who may not have a large amount of mathematical training to develop an unambiguous understanding of the notion of chaos and related aspects of dynamical systems theory. Concepts and techniques are introduced in the first parts of the book, which are later expanded to more mathematically abstract ideas in the latter parts of the book. For those who are already have some mathematical training, this text is intended to be an alternative to standard symbolic dynamics textbooks which both mildly generalizes their scope and specifically centers its discussion around dynamical systems theory aspects. It uses the notion of a "falsifiable system"—a type of set of infinite symbol sequences, which is an extension of both formal languages and symbolic dynamical systems—as a central conceptual link between the theory of formal languages and the study of chaos, and allows readers a method to identify chaos within such systems (and systems equivalent to them) by entirely graphical methods. The latter parts of the book then focus on how to apply these methods to understand the dynamics of more traditional, numerically-based systems.

The treatment of chaotic dynamics in mathematics and physics during last two decades has led to a number of new concepts for the investigation of complex behavior in nonlinear dynamical processes. The aim the CISM course Engineering Applications of Dynamics of Chaos of which this is the proceedings volume was to make these concepts available to engineers and applied scientists possessing only such modest knowledges in mathematics which are usual for engineers, for example graduating from a Technical University. The contents of the articles contributed by leading experts in this field cover not only theoretical foundations and algorithmic and computational aspects but also applications to engineering problems. In the first article an introduction into the basic concepts for the investigation of chaotic behavior of dynamical systems is given which is followed in the second article by an extensive treatment of approximative analytical methods to determine the critical parameter values describing the onset of chaos. The important relation between chaotic dynamics and the phenomenon of turbulence is treated in the third article by studying instabilities various fluid flows. In this contribution also an introduction into interesting phenomenon of pattern formation is given. The fourth and fifth articles present various applications to nonlinear oscillations including roll motions of ships, rattling oscillations in gear boxes, tumbling oscillations of satellites, flutter motions of fluid carrying pipes and vibrations of robot arms. In the final article a short treatment of hyperchaos is given.

Studies In Nonlinear Aeroelasticity written by Earl H. Dowell and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Science categories.

The great bulk of the literature on aeroelasticity is devoted to linear models. The oretical work relies heavily on linear mathematical concepts, and experimental results are commonly interpreted by assuming that the physical model behaves in a linear manner. Nevertheless, significant work has been done in nonlinear aero elasticity, and one may expect this trend to accelerate for several reasons: our ability to compute has increased at an astonishing rate; as linear concepts have been assimilated widely, there is a natural increase in interest in the foundations of nonlinear modeling; and, finally, some phenomena long recognized to be of interest, but beyond the effective range of linear models, are now known to be essentially nonlinear in nature. In this volume, an exhaustive review of the literature is not attempted. Rather the emphasis is on fundamental ideas and a representative selection of problems. Despite obvious successes in research on problems of aeroelasticity and the existence of a broad literature, including a number of excellent monographs, up to now little attention has been devoted to a general nonlinear theory of interac tion. For the most part nonlinearity has been considered either solely in the description of the behavior of a shell or in the description of the motion of a gas.

The Symmetry Of Chaos written by Robert Gilmore and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-05-17 with Art categories.

There is a tremendous fascination with chaos and fractals, about which picture books can be found on coffee tables everywhere. Chaos and fractals represent hands-on mathematics that is alive and changing. One can turn on a personal computer and create stunning mathematical images that no one has ever seen before. Chaos and fractals are part of dynamics, a larger subject that deals with change, with systems that evolve with time. Whether the system in question settles down to equilibrium, keeps repeating in cycles, or does something more complicated, it is dynamics that scientists and mathematicians use to analyze a system's behavior. Chaos is the term used to describe the apparently complex behavior of what we consider to be simple, well-behaved systems. Chaotic behavior, when looked at casually, looks erratic and almost random. The type of behavior that in the last 20 years has come to be called chaotic arises in very simple systems. In fact, these systems are essentially deterministic; that is, precise knowledge of the conditions of a system allow future behavior of the system to be predicted. The problem of chaos is to reconcile these apparently conflicting notions: randomness and predictability. Why have scientists, engineers, and mathematicians become intrigued by chaos? The answer to that question has two parts: (1) the study of chaos has provided new conceptual tools enabling scientists to categorize and understand complex behavior and (2) chaotic behavior seems to be universal - from electrical circuits to nerve cells. Chaos is about predictability in even the most unstable systems, and symmetry is a pattern of predictability - a conceptual tool to help understand complex behavior. The Symmetry of Chaos treats this interplay between chaos and symmetry. This graduate textbook in physics, applied mathematics, engineering, fluid dynamics, and chemistry is full of exciting new material, illustrated by hundreds of figures. Nonlinear dynamics and chaos are relatively young fields, and in addition to serving textbook markets, there is a strong interest among researchers in new results in the field. The authors are the foremost experts in this field, and this book should give a definitive account of this branch of dynamical systems theory.
