But much remains to be done to perfect our Banking system. With the exception of the leaders of the Co-operation movement our Indian publicists and Commercial leaders are not evincing much zeal in the matter. This little book describes the existing banking system and offers certain suggestions to bring about the much needed improvement in our credit situation. But a soundly organised banking system cannot be established as long as our monetary system is liable to frequent and sudden changes in the value of the different forms of money of which it is composed. Excerpt from Present-Day Banking: Its Methods, Tendencies and Characteristics From time to time during the last few years, and indeed until quite recently, I have written on current phases of banking for various newspapers and reviews, and published, in article form, summaries of lectures on banking and currency questions delivered at Bankers' Institutes, Chambers of Commerce, and kindred institutions. With the editors of certain papers I have had a convenient and elastic arrangement, in some cases formal and in others tacit, to the effect that on the occurrence of a banking or financial event of importance I should contribute or not, as leisure or inclination at the moment might prompt, an article dealing with the subject. On looking through a file of these contributions, it occurred to me that some of them dealt with banking problems still unsolved, and with financial matters still of current interest, and that these might possibly stand the test of reproduction in book form. I thereupon commenced a sifting process, putting aside articles of purely ephemeral interest, and selecting for publication such contributions as bore on subjects still of moment; certainly to the banker, possibly to the public. The beginning of modern day banking in India can be traced to the 18th century when English traders came to India. Besides the traders' commercial activities, the English Agency Houses in Calcutta and Bombay began to conduct banking business. Banking during the pre-independence period was largely characterized by the existence of private banks organized as joint stock companies. Most banks were small and had private shareholding of the closely-held variety. At the time of independence in 1947, the country's banking system was considered weak. The entire banking sector was in the private sector and the credit requirements of agriculture and other needy sectors were ignored. With a view to better aligning the banking system to the needs of planning and economic necessity, the policy of social control over the banking sector began in 1967. A couple of years later, the government nationalized many major commercial banks of the country. Further decades witnessed the transformation of the banking sector as a result of financial sector reforms that were introduced as a part of structural reforms initiated in 1991. This book integrates and brings together the history of modern banking in India, with a focus on recent developments in the context of the liberalization and privatization waves sweeping across world economies.
