The 1979 publication Where Have All the Farmlands Gone? by the National Agricultural Lands Study painted a bleak future for American farmlands. Threatened by encroaching construction and soil erosion, these lands were seen as endangered--and as the direct prelude to a nationwide shortage of both food and fiber. The NALS report, to which eleven federal agencies contributed, argued that landuse planning and control must be employed to protect valuable farmland from "urban sprawl." First published in 1984, this collection of essays by a distinguished group of economists, including Theodore W. Schultz, Julian L. Simon, and Pierre Crosson, takes issue with the belief that croplands need governmental protection. Rather, the collection as a whole supports two theses: 1) shrinking farm acreage is not a serious problem, and 2) individual choices by landowners in a free market setting result in betterorganized land use than would governmental landuse planning and regulation.

Intended for geography professors, researchers, and undergraduate students, this publication focuses on the important issues surrounding the urbanization of agricultural land, the assessment of the relative effectiveness of policy responses, and an assessment of opportunities for change in approaches toward farmland preservation. Emphasis is on agricultural land in Canada and the United States. There are seven chapters. The focus of chapter 1 is on urban growth and the competition for agricultural land, including a discussion of government intervention. Land conversion processes are discussed in the second chapter. Chapter 3 deals with land resources for food production, discussing how valuable farmland is defined, the agroclimatic resource index, existing and potential agricultural resources, and implications for the future. The fourth chapter treats the topic of agricultural land conversion. Planning to protect farmland and studies in farmland protection are the topics of chapters 5 and 6, respectively. The concluding chapter discusses agricultural land resources for the future. An appendix of commonly used acronyms and a bibliography are provided. (RM)

As land is lost to urban sprawl and other non-farm activity, our ability to produce food is diminished and options for future food production are limited. Farmland preservation speaks to the need to preserve the agricultural land base for future generations. The need for protection is driven by uncertainty caused by climate change, population growth, food security, energy availability, and other local and global factors. This uncertainty means that there is an ever-growing responsibility to ensure that the actions of today do not compromise the needs of future generations. This second edition of Farmland Preservation provides a range of views and case studies from across Canada, the United States, and beyond. Its fourteen essays are intended to help the reader understand the importance of the issue and the potential for applying new approaches to agricultural protection, policy tools, and initiatives.
