Excerpt from Dog Shows and Doggy People AS one who has always been a warm lover of dogs, taken a keen interest in dog shows ever since they were first started in this country, and been associated, in one way or another, with many of the most important shows held here, it has occurred to me that to men and women as the fanciers, breeders, and exhibitors amongst the fair sex are now very numerous and influential, and many of them quite up-to-date, even in the capacity of judges - with like tastes to my own, it may be useful and perhaps interesting as well to have a few particulars of the earlier shows, and, for the purpose of writing this book, I have therefore drawn on a long experience as an exhibitor, and perused many ancient catalogues and notes of bygone shows, collecting such details as I thought might be of interest about the Doggy People and dogs taking part in them, and giving slight sketches, accompanied in most cases with portraits, of some of the many friends and acquaintances I have met with during a long doggy career. So many names have presented themselves to me in this part of my subject, that I have had difficulty in making a selection without leaving out numbers who should be included, and, but for fear of making my book too large, I might have greatly extended the list; but I hope I have mentioned enough to serve as representatives of most classes of Doggy People. Whenever possible I have obtained reliable portraits of the people sketched, and of some of their dogs, which I think will have an additional attraction to those who do me the honour to read the book, the shortcomings of which are frankly acknowledged by the writer, who, however, has spared no pains to verify the facts and avoid exaggeration in the subjects dealt with. I may candidly say that a main inducement to write this book was the widespread popularity of my late book, which was, literally, All about Dogs, as I tried to comply with its title from first to last. In this connection I wish to gratefully recognise the very kind reception given to it by the Press, almost without exception. Going For The Blue written by Roger A. Caras and has been published by Grand Central Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-02-06 with Pets categories.

In this patented puppy tell-all, Roger Caras will enlighten, edify, and amuse us with the inside scoop that only he can provide on what really goes on behind the scenes of dog shows. He gives a brief history of how, without knowledge of genetics, ancient people first selectively bred dogs from wolves. He goes on to explain which factors are utilitarian and which are purely aesthetic and how these figure in judging a dog today. He then describes how dog shows evolved, how winners are selected, the immense amount of preparation that goes into grooming a showdog, what constitutes a champion, and the most important factor in a dog show -- politics. Peppered with photographs of champion dogs and dog shows from around the country, and filled with charming anecdotes about dogs who have made it to the top and those who have been left at the bottom of the doggy pile, "Going for the Blue" is a book that will appeal to dog lovers everywhere.

For many of us, the only way we meet "dangerous" dogs is through news reports about vicious attacks, and films and TV shows that feature out-of-control versions of man's best friend. But there's more to the Bad Dog's story than sensational headlines and movie beasts. A deeper look at these representations reveals a villain much closer to home. This book takes the reader on a rich journey through depictions of violent dogs in popular media. It explores how press accounts and screen stories transform canines into bloodthirsty hunters, rabies-infested strays, ferocious fighters, rogue law enforcement partners and diabolical pets, all adding up to a frightening picture of our usually beloved companions. But, when media tells the dangerous dog's story, it is often with a deep connection to the person on the other end of the leash.

Dogland written by Tommy Tomlinson and has been published by Simon and Schuster this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-04-23 with Pets categories.

“This book wants to lick your face. Let it.” —Kirkus Reviews From Pulitzer Prize finalist Tommy Tomlinson comes an inside account of the Westminster Dog Show that follows one dog on his quest to become a champion—and explores the bond between dogs and their people. Tommy Tomlinson was watching a dog show on television a few years ago when he had a sudden thought: Are those dogs happy? How about pet dogs—are they happy? Those questions sparked a quest to venture inside the dog-show world, in search of a deeper understanding of the relationship between dogs and humans that has endured for thousands of years. Dogland shares his surprising, entertaining, and moving adventures. Tomlinson spends three years on the road and goes behind the scenes at more than one hundred competitions across the country, from Midwestern fairgrounds to Madison Square Garden. Along the way he is licked, sniffed, and rubbed up against by dogs of nearly every size, shape, and breed. Like a real-life version of the classic mockumentary Best in Show, Dogland follows one champion show dog—a Samoyed named Striker—as well as his handler, Laura King, and his devoted entourage of breeders and owners as he competes in the 2022 Westminster Dog Show. Striker’s whole career has been leading up to this moment. As Tomlinson writes, picking a top show dog is like drafting an NFL quarterback when they’re still in elementary school. Now Striker has made it to the Super Bowl. Tomlinson takes readers on the long road to glory, bringing the dog-show circuit to life as he witnesses teams scrambling from town to town in search of championship points and large, colorful ribbons. (Striker and his crew travel in a custom-built RV named after Betty White.) Tomlinson’s limitless curiosity about people and dogs reaches far beyond the show tents and into the ordinary lives of dogs. We hear from experts who have discovered new insights into how dogs and humans formed their bond—and how that bond has changed over the centuries. We discover the fascinating origins of different dog breeds, learn about the elaborate breed standards that determine an ideal show dog, and consider the health issues that can arise in purebred dogs. We also meet dog lovers who applaud every dog, regardless of breed, simply for being themselves, such as WeRateDogs, the social media phenomenon with millions of followers, all for posts celebrating the day-to-day goofiness in most dog owners’ lives. Engaging, charming, and insightful, Dogland is an irresistibly appealing read that invites us on a rollicking backstage tour through the rituals, tricks, and wonders of the dog-show world—and reveals what matters most for the happiness of dogs and dog lovers everywhere.
